Can't Play a Generated Map

WonOnOne

Recommended Posts

I generate a map that's the 2nd to largest size, maximize towns and POIs, every everything else default. The seed looks promising so I decide to play it single player.

Before ever even playing this game, I clear game data, delete old characters, delete old maps, delete any trace of it it was ever on my computer. I uninstall it and do a fresh install. I've never used mods so there's no lingering data there.

After generating a map, I decide to actually play it. The game just exits mid-load and when I reload the game, the option to start a game with that map is disabled.

I really want to like this game, but I haven't been able to play since A20, quite frankly, because of bugs that make it unplayable. I can get a few hour of play before some error happens that makes it completely unplayable and I quit for a year, hear news about the next version, and stupidly think they've fixed bugs like Object Reference error that should have been fixed years ago. This game's bugs will bring out someone's inner Karen.

Anyway, the log file is short enough to paste here. I have little hope this game will be playable in A22. I want to be wrong, but I'm afraid I'm right. I'll be giving this a thumbs down on Steam:

You have a 7 year old **notebook* CPU and a similarily old notebook GPU with only 2G RAM. I don't know if this is the real cause of your problems, but it seems likely. This game (and you might have heard this before) is taxing any hardware because it uses a fully destrucitble world and voxels.

It may be possible to get this game to run if you dialed down hardware settings and/or generated the smallest possible map. I don't know, but I seem to remember at least one regular forum poster here saying he plays with such a setup, but also that lots of people seem to have problems with such hardware (I often see GTX 960M in the logs here in general support)

The logfile you posted is incomplete. If you really copied the complete log then the game must have crashed. There should be some windows log message showing you a reason why it crashed. You could use eventvwr to find that message.

I don't know. As that is likely a gaming laptop and the GPU is separate from CPU it could or should have its own memory, not shared.

The GPU should be discreet in this case, and is separate from system ram. VRAM isn't virtual ram, it's Video RAM. If it had shared RAM, the system would only be reporting 6GB RAM instead of 8GB.

The hardware setup looks like an entry-level gaming laptop circa 2016. The CPU is below current min spec, and the GPU is borderline without being stuck in an underpowered laptop. Add to that the minimum amount of RAM, and the whole setup is a recipe for disaster. You don't have enough VRAM to support loading the textures into the GPU memory, so it has to go to system RAM where you don't have enough overhead to be worthwhile, and all of this is being managed by a CPU that is already too slow when it isn't overheating. Once the CPU warms up a little (which won't be long because the thermal pads expired a few years ago), it gets underclocked to even further below the minimum required spec.

Log is too short to determine any specific cause, but that is likely because the system is hung up trying to process anything. If you post a better log, use Pastebin.

Okay, it probably is my laptop's fault. Maybe I was being a bit of a Karen. Are system requirements likely going to change when this game goes gold? I'm considering buying something near top-of-the-line come Black Friday, but maybe I should wait until this game goes gold. Thanks everyone for your help.

System requirements have been updated every couple of builds. I don't see them changing much from where they are at currently, however it should also be noted that they are currently extremely vague. To the point where it isn't very helpful information at all almost.

Just stay away from craptops, and you should usually be fine.
