Game crashes on launch

Hi there,

 

I am new to the game, just installed the Steam version, and I spent the day trying to get it to work with no success.

When I start the game with Directx 11 or Vulkan, it crashes on launch (a black screen appears with just the cursor, eventually I got a crash report).

When I start the game with GLCore, it starts properly, but it is insanely slow and many textures do not load until I get really close to them. The game is just unplayable.

 

I am using Windows 11, with and AMD Ryzen 7, 7800X3D 8-core ; my GPU is a Radeon 7900 XTX.

 

I have tried reinstalling the game, reinstalling the drivers, updating everything that can possibly be updated (including the BIOS...). I ran a /scannow, a chkdsk, malwarebytes and bitdefender. I even tried older drivers for my GPU. I tried different settings. The error message on the Event viewer is "AppHang" or "AppHangXProcB1". I googled that and tried all the solutions I found.

 

At this stage, I have made 0 progress and it is getting frustrating to say the least.

 

Has someone experienced and fixed that by any chance?

Paste a log file to pastebin, see what the crash is. It'll be in appdata/roaming/7daystodie. I will take a gander seeing as you used malwarebytes and bitdefender (both highly and kind of unnecessarily aggressive), it may be one of those causing it. Only use one antivirus at a time (they can conflict with one another) -- honestly Windows Defender is fine -- and add the game folder and the save folder in appdata to exclusions.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to merntion, I also tried to launch the game after uninstalling malwarebytes and bitdefender, with no success either.

EDIT : I forgot to mention: the screen crashes and I have the windows popup saying they're sending a report, but on Steam, the game still shows as launched, and there is no way for me to shut it down that I have found, I have to restart the computer.

Also, my issue with GLCore is "ExposureHistogram.compute: Kernel at index (0) is invalid" that keeps spamming in the console and in the pastebin. Hope it helps

That's all it reaches to, is there a crash dump in LocalLow/The Fun Pimps? Odd... the last thing it's doing is setting the texture quality, but I'm not sure if that step is it loading the textures into memory or not. Have you added exclusions to Windows Defender? Just in case you don't know how (since Windows does move it around...) 

  • Go into Windows Security
  • Left side, go to Virus & Threat Protection
  • Under Virus & threat protection settings, there's a Manage setting button, click that
  • All the way at the bottom, there's a Add or remove exclusion button, click that
  • + add an exclusion -- click Folder
  • Add the main 7 days to die game folder, and another one for the appdata folder

 

Also, Malwarebytes I know of to be a very persistent program in that if you uninstall it, usually it still runs anyway, hiding in nested program installations. Check task manager (both programs running and the services tab) and hunt for Malwarebytes/Bitdefender processes running. Most of the big name brand antiviruses are persistent installs, and try their best to remain running without the user knowing, or thinking they actually uninstalled them.

This one is a bit weird. I looked the compute error up that's in your log, and I haven't found much except it's something thrown in Unity on post-processing errors... maybe try disabling:

 

  • Reflection Quality
  • Reflected Shadows
  • Bloom
  • Depth of Field
  • Motion Blur
  • SSAO
  • SS Reflections
  • Sun Shafts

It may not be all of these and it may just be one of them, but if we get you going with all of these turned off then we have a big lead.

@jugginator : thanks, this definitely solved the issue with textures not loading, and there is now no error anymore in the console. The game is still too slow to be playable, with 2-3 FPS, even with lower graphic options. For info, I can play games like BG3 or Starfield with no issue, so I think my GPU is not damaged

 

@meganoth : Hi, yes it was, I tried to run it with different version of directx, to no further success. I removed this line since then and tried again, no joy

 

 

EDIT: interestingly, since I applied the options jugginator suggested, I am now able to start the game with Directx 11 (or is it one of the many other things I tried, or a combination, I dunno, point is, I can now start with dx11). Unfortunately, the game is as slow as for GLCore. Here is the log, in case it helps :

For some reason I cannot edit my previous post anymore. However I want to add the following:

 

I tried to uninstall the adrenaline software from AMD and revert to an old driver (23.9.1) as I read somewhere that apparently it was the last fully stable driver for many games.

Iwas both disappointed and not: reverting back to this old driver solved my issue with FPS. BUT, it brought back the "ExposureHistogram.compute: Kernel at index (0) is invalid" and not loading textures anymore, despite turning off the options jugginator suggested.

 

 

So now it looks like I have the choice between super low FPS or textures not loading...

I hope this info helps, I am still testing some stuff, will keep you informed if anything.

Ok, I know there have been some issues with textures, shadows, and other similar things on those 7800/7900's, but you shoudn't be having that kind of an issue.

 

Step 1 : Exclude your game client and save folder from security software.  If you say "I don't have any", you have Defender and it must be excluded. I cover this in detail in the Support FAQ thread that is Pinned.

 

Step 2 : After you have fully excluded the client, now validate the files three times. Once almost never finds everything, and twice isn't much better.

 

Step 3 : Reboot your computer. I would recommend doing a full hard shutdown and power drain if you haven't in a while. 

 

Step 4 : Back up your save files to another location. (File locations are in the Pinned FAQ thread.)

 

Step 5 : Nuke everything. The Blue banner at the top of this page has instructions. Want to be certain that everything is fully reset.

 

Step 6 : Try these video settings. I'm on an R9 3900X with 32GB RAM and a 6800XT. I average well over 100FPS at 1440p all the time.

 

Step 7 : Try again on a fully fresh map/save. This will rule out any data corruption from previous worlds.  

 

If that works, then you can try restoring previous save data and see how it runs.

Hi, thanks for the help. I followed your instructions and there is definitely improvement. Visually I do not have any texture issue anymore in the game. However the console keeps getting spammed (several lines a second) with the same error "ExposureHistogram.compute: Kernel at index (0) is invalid" and the FPS is better but still quite low (around 12 to 15), which may be caused by the error being spammed.

 

I feel we're getting close.

I am not sure if this is a red herring or not, but I noticed in your logs it says the screen is 1hz? That doesn't sound right to me 🤔 maybe you could try messing with the resolution settings/fullscreen modes?

Hi, so I have tried to fiddle a bit with the resolution and fullscreen mode. The best results I got was to set it up on auto res, set it on 60Hz. Now in the log it does show 60Hz, and the FPS rose slightly to 15, which makes it somewhat playable, although clearly wobbly.

Hmm. I do know that there's a possibility a new Unity update would help you out, which we've been doing for work in A22 (we have updated a few times). 

 

But, I'd love it if we could get you playing now :)

 

Something seems to be getting in the way... couple of wild ideas I have:

 

  • Try uninstalling Radeon software and making sure none of it is running; or, make sure everything is dictated by the game (i.e. make sure nothing in Radeon Software is passing on option changes)
  • Edit your power plan, notably go into Advanced Settings and look for these, have a play around with them.image.thumb.png.8aa364716aff4403500f4b4f40a040aa.png
  • Also, you have enough power to do this: try running the dedicated server on your machine and connect to it (you can bypass port forwarding most likely by connecting by 127.0.0.1 in the manual join by direct ip option in the browser). If you have a secondary machine (even an old laptop), that works too.

Ah one more thing, when you reinstalled the GPU driver, did you use DDU? If not, try it that way. The last AMD card I had was notorious for needing to use DDU like every month, the reinstall options for AMD (well, Nvidia too for that matter) don't reinstall the driver cleanly and will leave old stuff behind. DDU will ensure all of it is wiped. Install the new driver (before rebooting after using DDU) offline.

So....

 

Apparently Microsoft removed the power options for Windows 11. When asked, their answer is "because F*CK YOU!". So I could not try this.

 

I did uninstall my radeon drivers using DDU, and it brought interesting results. Now GLCore and Directx 11 both start the game and both provide the same experience. The error "ExposureHistogram.compute: Kernel at index (0) is invalid" is gone! Yes, it's gone, and that's amazing.

However, loading a game (or starting a new one) is much longer. Specifically, the step "Building Environment" takes literally a few minutes to go through. When it finally loads, the FPS drops to 1.

Apparently Microsoft removed the power options for Windows 11. When asked, their answer is "because F*CK YOU!". So I could not try this.

 

I did uninstall my radeon drivers using DDU, and it brought interesting results. Now GLCore and Directx 11 both start the game and both provide the same experience. The error "ExposureHistogram.compute: Kernel at index (0) is invalid" is gone! Yes, it's gone, and that's amazing.

However, loading a game (or starting a new one) is much longer. Specifically, the step "Building Environment" takes literally a few minutes to go through. When it finally loads, the FPS drops to 1.

You can, search for "power plan". They renamed it lol. I am on win 11 too. Once I get home in a little bit I'll do a video. At least we made some progress.

 

@faatal would you have any workaround ideas? Or is this something you think would be worked out with a Unity update done for A22?

No worries, I can wait a bit if it's gonna release soon. After what you mentioned about Unity, I tried out of curiosity to launch other games that use Unity and that I used to play before investing in a sweet 7900XT. And clearly there is an issue between 7900XT and Unity, and directx seems to be related as well. Some games I could not start, some games I could start after changing which directx to launch it with, some games I had very low FPS, quite similar to 7D2D.

The whole issue seems to be in the hands of AMD, who are not seemingly doing much to address this (old) problem...

Yeah unfortunately AMD has always been behind on drivers and game-support, they can't quite seem to get it right on newer cards. I'm really hoping a Unity update will help that out. If you ever get a hankering and want to do some troubleshooting definitely let me know.

It seems like they have this issue about every other generation. 5000-series GPU, major issues at launch with game compatibility and driver. 6000-series, no problems. now 7800XT and 7900XT's are almost unplayable on a large number of games.

Ah fair, too true. The the fiasco of their new anti-lag+ deal getting players banned by anti-cheats that's taking them what, half a year almost and still no fixes lol. I contemplated getting a new AMD gpu the other day, and these reminders keep me away.

Yeah, performance-per-dollar AMD is really winning out though. For $3-400 less than Nvidia you can get the same spec performance.  I was just helping someone that was looking at a 3060 TI, and managed to get a 6800XT for only about $50 more. It runs almost equivalent to a 4070 without any overclocks.
