Suggestion: Crowd fund a migration to a new engine - even if that were to be handled by other people while you work on the next game.

I think plenty people would appreciate that - and unlocking more potential for this would ensure more unrestricted updates and development instead of having your game as a symbolic anachronism in a few more years, frozen in an outdated and restricted capacity.

This has been suggested many many times before and the answer is still the same, it will take to long to start again.

The issue with 7d2d is that's unique and I do mean unique, there is not a single other game trying to do what they are doing.

Space Engineers, Empyrion, Minecraft are all voxels games and I have played all of them a lot but none of them have roving hordes of zombies, full blocks physics on every block, massive city's that can be destroyed, mining everything, build anything you want to build.

All the other games have AI and things but they don't have everything in one package.

SE gets massive lag with bases get big, Minecraft has a lot of static blocks and no massive city's that can be blown up and are very detailed.

GTA 6 has a budget of 2 billion dollars and is still static landscape.

Unreal engine 5 is still a static landscape.

There is not a single game like 7d2d or in development that is doing what they are doing because it's stupidly hard to do and far far easier to do it in a game that you can't change the landscape or blown up the  buildings .

The sons of the forest has one of best building systems I have seen in a while but is still a static system.

The fun pumps have 3 new games in development and I would not bet against 7d2d2 been one of them.

    Just my two cents

But what does a loot option have to do with mining oil shale? Sure, 50% loot would reduce the bits of gas from pumps and stuff, but that isn't much to begin with. And I love the idea of running 50% or 75% loot, and I have in several games, but I'm not a fan of the way the game handles reduced loot.

And I never said anything about gas always being a crazy struggle. I do feel how it is now is too easy even for end game times. And sure, the beakers are RNG but for all the games I've played I have never had the issues some people have of being day 50 or 100 or whatever with not even one beaker to show for it. Maybe with reduced loot or no airdrops or not using traders it becomes an issue, but then you can't really complain.

I agree with this. Which is the point to my original post about gas. Yes, you need a beaker and a chem station, but getting those items doesn't take long enough in an average game to justify that being all it takes to have unlimited gas. And yes, I'm aware you still have to mine the oil shale and that somehow seems like a whole ordeal to some, but if you can't manage your time wisely enough to spend part of one day mining enough shale to last your whole play through, then that's on you. Vehicles in general are a bit easy mode in A20 thanks to the OP traders. Between them constantly having either the vehicle or parts themselves, the schems to make them or giving you a whole vehicle as a quest tier reward, it's easier than ever to get one and keep it fueled. I guess it's just a continuation from the last couple alphas of making the game easier in general.

Well this whole discussion might be a totally mute point for the following reasons.

    Secret stash is gone

    Traders have been rebalanced

The whole skill tree progress is totally different now

    Looting is reworked

    Vehicles have been changed

So my take is that until we get to play this new game, which all the changes it will be a completely new game to most of us, we will have to speculate and guess.

There is supposed to be a progression from struggling to thriving in each aspect of survival represented in the game.

Pretty much exactly that, not everyone wants to spend weeks grinding for every ounce of fuel or scrap of food.

I simply don't have the time to do so, why they give you the options, loot 50%, never respawn, no planes, feral zombies ect ect.

  4. @Roland @faatal @madmoleWith A21 taking so long and if I am not mistaken this is the longest time between Alphas yet.

We are dying for some meaty news, I mean it's been over a year now, I have literally watched my daughter been born and she is now 1.

I know you don't owe us anything and you already do so much for this community as is.

So thank you so much for everything you guys do!

The vehicles update is awesome and all but according to @madmole, you guys were going to try for gold end of this year.

Is going gold this year still in the pipeline or has the new changes pushed it WID?

Is A21 getting closer to daylight?

With the long Dev time of A21 will bandits possibly see the light of day in A21?

Are there more environmental hazards besides fire, say toxic gas, electrical, cold, radiation, bio hazard?

    Will radiation make a return?

Will zombie smelling ever return or is it dead and buried?

Does water collected from a dew collector need to be boiled?

    Thanks

    Anni

    Or radioactive...

    Hi Faatal

Please don't make it radioactive water, it does my head in, I know it's a game but radiation just does not work that way.

Toxic water sure, dirty water can do, unclean water not a problem.

A biological agent released into the air during the nuclear war has contaminated all water sources and you need a Charcoal water filter (charcoal, crushed sand, stone, plastic, cloth, scrap iron and two buckets) or a dew collector and then the water has to be boiled for you to drink it.

You would have the do that in real world with most water sources anyway as most are not clean enough to drink from.

I think you misunderstood how the magazine change works.  You no longer have to find a specific book (schematic) in order to make something.  You find magazines that are, in a way, generic.  For example, you find magazines relating to spears.  You find these often and each one you read increases your knowledge.  You aren't looking for many different volumes of the magazine, but are looking just for the spear magazine.  Initially, you can only make a tier 1, quality 1 spear, but as you find more of this magazine, you learn more and can make better spears.  By perking into spears, your chances of finding spear magazines increases, making it easier to find the magazines in order to make better spears.  Unlike now, where if you can't find a specific schematic you can't make something, you will find magazines often and will unlock the better versions of items as you read them.  RNG no longer prevents you from making something.  Of course, this also means you don't get lucky and find a schematic for something great immediately.  If anything, this change solves the problem you are describing rather than creating that problem.

As far as difficulty finding magazines, this should not be a big problem.  If you want magazines related to medicine crafting, visit a pharmacy or hospital.  If you want magazines related to guns, visit a shotgun messiah.  You can still find other magazines in these places, but you have a greater chance of getting magazines that fit the POI.  And magazines will drop far more often than what we see now, where most drops are paper.

Now, I haven't played A21 obviously, so I'm going by what has been revealed, but the changes seen like they will be good overall.  I was initially concerned about them and I still am a bit leery, but I don't expect a serious problem except for people who try to rush through by trying to get specific schematics right away.  That said, I did like the variety between games and am a little concerned that this linearity may make the game stale after a few games because things will progress the same each game instead of having variety.  That is my biggest concern.

Thanks for your comprehensive reply, it might be the greatest skill system ever and I think some of my issue with it might be its just such a massive change from anything we have ever used before.

I am playing Empyrion currently and it uses a system similar to A20 so it easy to understand.

I just hope we get a bigger backpack, so much loot to carry and yes I am packrat, I strip every POI of everything thats not nailed down and then somethings that are.

Thanks Roland for all your Hard work you put into these forums, I know its not easy.

Granted it's probably not the majority of people, but neither is it an edge case for people who play in groups to divide their labor, for example on a community server supporting a streamer. Or even solo gamers who want to play a low-loot, self-sufficient type of game.

My point is to shine a light on the fact that not everyone plays the game as a roving murder-hobo rummaging through one POI after another.

If they keep chasing that lowest common denominator, it becomes recursive, and everyone plays that way because it is the only way left to play.

It would be nice if the devs would kindly take their thumb off the scales to force gameplay in that direction.

And you are right, one would hope that a good group would help out the support people back home building things and making the hobo stew for everyone.

I recommend a google search to help clear up the historical reference.

    https://gprivate.com/62uqp

    That generalization is patently false.

Just off the top of my head:

    Green Hell, rainforest.

The Long Dark, surrounded by snow.

    Raft, literally floating in water.

I am not the least bit angry, Roland.

If anything, I am just sick and tired of disappointment.

We are a decade into "early access", that excuse ran its course long ago.

Besides, playtesting implies they actually listen to the feedback from us peasants at some point in the development process, which all too often does not appear to be the case.

Most of the time when I see someone try to give feedback, people like you (often specifically you) shout us down to defend whatever the newest questionable mechanic is as if your life depends on it.

Thank you for finally addressing my concern.

This is my concern with learn by looting, it forces you to been in the city looting and as Grue said a 'roving murder-hobo' it gives you 0 other options, I know that its been said several times, your friends can bring you the books you need.

What if they need the books themselves or they simply dont find it or they dump the books due to lack of space in the inventory.

When I play I have had times where I just dont want to deal with clearing out another 5 - 10 POI to find a book or a crucible and I just craft and build and mine for the XP I need to build my horde base, but I dont have a choice now, I must go into the city and loot and kill to get what I need for the horde base.

IMO and I might be completely wrong here, It forces you into one game play style

Need to know how to make concrete

Go to the city kill and loot and hope you find the book you need.

Need to know how to make a AK47

Go to the city kill and loot and hope you find the book you need.

Need to know how to make traps

Go to city and kill and loot and hope you find the book you need.

    Example

"Its day 13 and I have yet to find a book on how to make concrete and I am still looting, day 14 arrives still looking , find it lunch day 14 but now I dont have enough time to make what I need, so I die and my base gets destroyed. "

You could maybe get them from a trader but that still means your are looting to get the coin.

I have spent hours and hours thinking about this and how it there might a variation I might be missing but I cant seem to find it, everything is now tied to finding books and hoping the RNG does not screw you over.

I know most of this post is pure speculation as we have yet to play this new version but its been 14 months since A20 so I dont really have a choice but to speculate :)

But mainly, I am just dying to play the new build for me the number one change is the water fix, I cant wait to see it.

Thanks so much for everything you guys are doing.

the concept is good, the game is good, the code is horrible they made a mistake and should have optimized from the ground up instead of adding more and more without optimizing , if they would have started from the ground up, and then added things in optimizing them before adding more this wouldnt be the memory leak fest that it is today. We still in ALPHA? Jesus the longest running game in ALPHA that I have ever seen and now they wanna take away things that are unnecessary and unbalanced seems like the fun pimps are committing suicide on this game...  I love this game, I only wish TFP would just optimize the game, and leave it as is its already a great game without taking away from it, or adding anything to it. -Just Optimize and give your fans what they want online play nobody wants to play the game like youd have them play they want online play with multiple people, not 7-8 people only.

Hmm smells like a troll, you post this with exactly one post.

There are loads of games still in development with a equal or longer development cycle than 7D2D,  Star Citizen, beyond good and evil two 16years for that one.

None of those games have tried to do what 7D2D does not one.

Not even Unreal Engine 5.1 can do it, a full destructive world with vehicles and a full gravity system for each block.

I have done a ton of research and not even Minecraft does it but it's the closest game to it.

Are there problems yes are they fixing them yes they are.

Each alpha we get new features and benefits and feals like a new game.

Have mistakes been made yes they have but this game is unique and it's sales number reflect that.

Optimizing has happened is happening and will happen in the future.

They have a vision for THEIR game, I don't agree with everything but I trust them enough to give them the benefit of doubt, if you don't agree that's your choice.

So slight that we are sure to get frustrated posts that it doesn't seem to be working properly because they're finding more magazines in something they didn't perk into than in the thing they did perk into. But not so slight that we shouldn't ever get any frustrated posts that someone has gone days or weeks without ever finding any of the magazines they perked into. Fun times ahead no doubt =p

Like spending weeks trying to find a crucible in the current game 😋

Ah I see. slightly affects it. hmm, will have to play and see how slight. Thanks for the heads up

With LBR it's a whole new thing, so you perk into Hunting rifles you will see more hunting rifles magazines in the world until you hit the max level of say 100, then it drops it back down to normal loot rates.

It also stops you from getting a quality 5 item straight off the bat since you can't craft it but you can get a slightly better brown/blue ect.

From the one screen shot I saw, the auto shot gun only unlocks at like level 75 and a Q6 at level 100 I think.

  12. 10 minutes ago, RipClaw said:

Traders are OP because they sell items that are much better than what you can find or craft. This is supposed to change in A21 anyway. According to what was said in the interview, they should only sell items that are a bit better than what you can craft or find.

I would rather see your suggestion in the context of the factions that are also mentioned in the interview. Each trader could belong to a different faction and you have to complete tasks to earn their trust.

Well since bandits are not coming in A21, I don't know if they will do the factions for the traders but maybe @Roland or @faatal will give us a tidbit.

I don't mind either way for nerd polling nearly impossible to control in free building game, what could happen is the loot rooms are locked behind powered doors/environmental hazards and moved deep inside the POI.

LIke water works had the steel door added that is powered.

  13. 15 minutes ago, Jost Amman said:

That's actually a great idea, IMO!

The Secret Stash should only be available after you complete at least Tier 1 of the trader quests.

I would even go as far as to say the level of Secret Stash you can access should go hand in hand with the level of job tiers you've completed for the trader!

Exactly what I was thinking and when move to the new trader. You don't get access to the SS since the trader does not know you and you have to build that level of trust again.

    8 minutes ago, Blake_ said:

@faatal, what have you guys decided about nerd poling? Will you impede the placing of frames while jumping/falling or something related to the LCB like Rick mentioned in the last interview?

As a veteran, I use it a lot, and I must say that I seldom die and it's mostly because of the wood frame gods, so maybe it's not that fun to not struggle as intended.

    Thanks in advance.

In the interview that did mentioned that and I would not surprised if they block nerd polling in and around POI.

  14. 1 hour ago, Outlaw_187 said:

True but they could just splice this in with the "regular" stash. The secret stash category is simply another click, nothing more.

Either way, I'm fine. If it stays, cool, if it's gone, cool too.

I just want A21 to drop baby!!!!

For me, secret stash should be hidden behind your trader level once you unlock the next trader do you get access to the SS but it's also tied to your gamestage and or LBR level, so you don't get purple gear at day 10.

Currently it's just button click to get access to it and nothing secret about it

  15. 6 minutes ago, meilodasreh said:

but it fits well to the fact that the devs want to prevent things where you can "skip progression".

Now, when you invested some points into better barter (or was it that perk?) ...anyhow, then there is soo much overpowered stuff in it sometimes.

And when you didn't perk into, well at least I have the feeling that then it is just another tab of "unfiltered" stuff, where you mostly could get the same stuff that is also available in the other tabs.

So I would not especially miss it I guess.

I hope the stash does not get removed, I rather have it changed or locked behind a skill check. I loved working hard to get the dukes and buying rare stuff, sometimes was only way to get solar panels.

Builder: No, I think a 22.5 degree angle is better.  Why?

Looter: Exactly, you stick to building and I'll stick to looting. Thank you very much....

No one is being punished.  I empathize with those who don't like doing activity A or B, however the game has always had progression in its design and activities to explore the world.

It's like saying you want to play chess but only want to use a few of the pieces but expect the same results as someone who uses all the pieces.

I agree that it has always had progression in it, but this system just feels the most limited out of all the ones they have tried so far.

    Learn by Doing

    Skill Tree V1

    Skill Tree V2

    Learn By Looting

I may be missing some, but the point is by locking away all skills behind magical magazines is very limiting IMO.

  17. 44 minutes ago, Roland said:

You mean builders will have to step away from building to go loot a drop chest?  Outrageous!!!!

The impact on inventory is huge. As a single player I read everything immediately. You can easily acquire a dozen different magazine titles while clearing a couple of POIs and if you are saving them all to be read by someone else then, yeah, inventories will fill up fast.

From what I can tell, those who enjoy inventory management will be fine with the changes and those who hate inventory management already modded the size of their backpacks ages ago and will also be fine.

If the devs see the need to increase backpack size, so be it, but as of now there has been no changes to inventory size

That is a valid option but if they are looting across the map, the builder will have to go loot with them anyway.

I just don't understand why there is this need to punish people who just want to build or mine do something else than kill zombies and loot.

For me one of the great appeals of 7D2D was the choice of what I wanted to do, Do I build today or do I mine or do I kill zombies, now my choice is Kill zombies and loot magazines everything else is secondary.

Rather let the players play how they want to and not force them into a single play style IMO.

  18. Having watched the forums for months now I am really worried that A21 is going to be a giant miss step in the wrong direction with the following two things.

Learn by Looting and the removal of water jars.

First one I will tackle is water.

This is a bit of an odd change since water is not the hard to clean in the real world. Removal of the Jars makes no sense, it's like removing the bullet casing since we only shoot the tip of bullet.

To make water a bit more of a challenge we could do the following.

Change Murky water to dirty water.

If you drink from a flowing stream/river you have a 30% chance of dysentery.

Drink from a standing pond of water 70% chance of dysentery.

Drink from an ocean you lose water or to keep it simple you drink from dirty water 50% chance of dysentery.

To clean water you need to collect in your Jar/Bucket/Tin - Dew Collector will only give 2-3 jars a day of clean water

Once Collected you could filter it using a charcoal filter - so to make it Charcoal/sand/rocks/Cloth and Plastic for the Bottle.

Water takes 1 hour to filter in game time +-

2 jars of dirty water will give 1 of clean water

Or just boil it and give you boiled water

2 jars of dirty water will give 1 of boiled water

If you Filter it and boil it gives you Purified water, which gives you all the current bonuses.

So, if you filter it and boil it, it's a 4 to 1 ratio

So you need to work for your water,

    No magical Jars

Water is more effort to get and clean

The Water filter has to be replaced/repaired as it will decay with use

With effort you get a good reward, but with little effort you can survive but effort is still spent

You have to loot to get the materials

That just my take on water, sorry been long winded.

    Learn by Looting

No easy way to say this it screws over builders

I have played with and play with plenty of people who love to mine/build and garden and have 0 interest in killing zombies.

I hear you say that other players can bring back magazines for them but then you are messing them around as well since we have limited inventory space.

Not everyone wants to fight zombies or spend all our time looting, it feels like we are being forced into looting and at the expense of building and mining, by the sounds of it, why would I spend my time building a unique building now as I get 0 xp for doing so, same with mining for the materials I need. Easier just to take over a POI and went it goes down to a horde move to the next one.

I feel a connection with building the base, I want to defend it and the XP I get is a small reward for doing so, now I have to spend all my time looting books for the skills I need instead of just mining and building and hoping the RNG Gods don't screw me over.

With our group we always had ppl that just chose to mine and build, then others love to kill zombies and loot so that's what they did and other played a mix of the two.

Now everyone has to go killing and looting if they want to do anything, they have already said they won't be moving to A21 due the skill changes.

This change limits our play styles a lot and IMO it's not a good change.

The current system is excellent and is easy to understand, really does not need be ripped apart like this.

I just started a new world with a friend who never played the game before, and he picked it up within 10 mins.

    Just my two cents.

Does occlusion work on game objects such are cars, beds lamps ect or is just Buildings and the like?

  20. Speaking from real world experience generally anything you make while working for a company you don't own it.

All the POI ever made for 7D2D belong to the TFP and only them, it does not matter if you spent 1000 hours on it, you still used their assets to make it.

All of sudden saying you own the Combopack and no one is allowed to use it unless you say so, is very against the sprit of this community.

What this will mostly like lead to, is all the people that made POI and were included in the CP will withdraw their permissions to CP to use their POI in it.
