Hot and Cold Overhaul - A16 Temperature System

After a month and half of modding my own game with various mods and learning about fixing mods, adding my own ideas to mods and hours of fixing stuff I present you a culmination of my knowledge - my own modlet that brings back "temperature system from A16" *Hands up! - Hooray!*

Okay, not really, but it does make temperature debuffs much more deadly than they currently are in A20 (cause we all know those debuffs don't fuken do anything). Also, it's not even 1:1 conversion... So what is it then you may ask?

Well, here's how it works:

Debuffs when your temperature rises:

  • Overheated - 80F to 95F - Player loses 1 Water every 10 seconds
  • Hot - 95F to 110F - Player loses 1 Water every 7 seconds, 1 Stamina every second, and their mobility (Walk Speed, Run Speed, Jump Strenght) is lowered by 30%
  • Sweltering - Above 110F - Player loses 1 Water every 5 seconds, 3 Stamina every second, 1 Health every 4 seconds and their mobility is lowered by 50%. Also your screen will get blurred slightly

Debuffs when your temperature drops:

  • Cold - 60F to ~48F - Player loses 1 Food every 10 seconds
  • Freezing - ~48F to 35F - Player loses 1 Food every 7 seconds, 2 Stamina every second, 1 Health every 10 seconds and their mobility (Walk Speed, Run Speed, Jump Strenght) is lowered by 30%
  • Hypothermia - Below 35F - Player loses 1 Food every 5 seconds, 3 Stamina every second, 1 Health every 4 seconds and their mobility (Walk Speed, Run Speed, Jump Strenght) is lowered by 50%. Also your screen will get blurred slightly

So, you may notice that temperatures that debuffs start effecting you have changed, and well, I wanted to bring it as close to possible to A16 values as I thought those were fine. Still they do differ from those values a bit (For Hot effects for example triggers in A16 are at 100 - 110, 110 - 120 and 120+). I was also a bit afraid that I (and you) won't really ever reach those temperatures in A20 so I lowered the values slightly.

If you played A16 you may also notice that Cold effects have 3 instead of 4 debuffs. Well, that is a shoutout to TFP and their simplifiying of everything /jk Or maybe not jk... nobody will ever know :)

Mod also changes Well Insulated perk to keep it in line with debuff changes:

  • Well Insulated Level 1 - Gives you 5 Insulation (down from 10 in vanilla) and lowers Food, Water, Stamina and Health consumption when affected by Hot and Cold debuffs by 20%
  • Well Insulated Level 2 - Gives you 10 Insulation (down from 20 in vanilla) and lowers Food, Water, Stamina and Health consumption when affected by Hot and Cold debuffs by 40%
  • Well Insulated Level 3 - Removes Mobility changes from Freezing and Hot debuffs, lowers Mobility changes when affected by Hypothermia and Sweltering to 30% (from 50%) and lowers Food, Water, Stamina and Health consumption when affected by Hot and Cold debuffs by 60%

So, yeah, you will still be affected by extreme debuffs (Sweltering and Hypothermia) even when you get level 3 of Well Insulated perk. Lowered bonus insulation values are just so you will actually be affected by temperature lol For some reason with only 10 Insulation I needed outside temperature to drop to like 40F to get Feels Like below 60F. I like when game is a bit more punishing so I lowered that bonus insulation from Well Insulated by half.

That's about it I guess? I hope everything works, but well, I'm not actually a modder so I can't guarantee anything :(

I know people will ask about compatibility with other mods, so I'll preface some questions with some information:

  • I tested this mod with at least 60 other mods that changed many aspects of the game. I would give you a list, but I'm a bit lazy to make it so I won't kekw
  • It should work with everything that doesn't touch areas I changed. So any Naked Trader Jen mod should work...
  • I don't play with big overhauls. I know, I'm sorry, but I just like making my game to my own liking and not using others vision of it. So I can't vouch it would work with them, you will have to test it yourself and tell me what you find
  • I will shoutout Dough's Punishing Weather mod, and recommend you use that mod with this one as I use both! I really wanted to name this modlet Punishing Temperatures, but didn't want to steal his name idea so it gets a basic name

PS: I come from Skyrim modding community and I'm a supporter of cathedral modding so my code is free to use. This means you can use it in your overhaul, modpack, you can make it better or you can make your own mod based on my code I don't care. I want us to build something big and great together and this small modlet is my contribution to that. I guess, if you want to you can stroke my ego a bit by mentioning my name if you did use this modlet for anything hahaha but you are not required to do it. If I missed anything do tell me

Deffo going to try this out with A21. Does it take into account the temperature increase from burning barrels, active campfires, torches, and whatnot?

I have not touched (or even really know how tbh) any of that, so anything that raises or lowers your temperature in vanilla will still work the same. I have tested it with campfire and it did increase my temperature (it was a very extreme test with 100F outside temp and me wearing a jacket + pants - but my temp did rise). Wetness should modify your temperature more than before tho.

hey...How about the  a21?

Oof, no idea 😕 I won't be swapping cause I really dislike the change to progression, and I just finished modding my game for A20 so kinda just want to play it first. But, if you do test it tell me how it went! Also, I don't mind people fixing the mod for A21 if something is not working :)
