No backpack after being killed by an animal? (A18 and A19)

I've found that ever since A18 I seem to have about a 30-50% chance to have my backpack not be there if I'm killed by an animal. Don't believe I've ever had the issue from a zombie death, though I could be mistaken. I'm playing single player, no mods, drop everything on death. The backpack indicator will still be on the compass and it will lead me to exactly where I died, but there will be no bag there. This has happened with a boar, a dog/wolf, and most recently with a bear. I've dug down, looked up to see if it was floating, no luck.

 

I will note that I did have a multi-death run in with a mountain lion (or whatever the big cat is) in A19, and the bag was always there for those. 

 

Side-note: If there is some command to force my backpack/items back into my hand, would love to know it! I'm not above using a "cheat" to get around a bug.

Not sure what you're saying here? I can use the logs to just give myself every item that was in my backpack one at a time? Or I can use that data to give myself everything at once? If it's the former, that could get real tedious, especially if it's pretty full.

 

Or are you saying that the log should show some bug of why I see it correctly on the compass but not in the world?

Below are a few of the lines from my log. Can you let me know if I'm missing something? I've used teleport to go directly to where it says and it's where the bear killed me (and it's where the compass points). But again, no bag. Is the issue the OnDestroy()? Does that mean the bag got destroyed somehow?

I have had this exact same issue. Just again happened to me. I look at my logs and cannot make sense of them myself.

But it too was to a mountain lion that I died. What is interesting is that suddenly there was a Red Mountain Lion Icon on my compass and map, located at the trader. Not sure why, and when I went there, nothing special happened, so maybe something to come? Regardless, seems annoying to have the bag not where it was meant to be, and even dug down into the snow some just to check. My wife (also died to the same lion) had her bag where it was supposed to be, so not actually sure why sometimes it does get 'eaten' and other times, not.

Anoher observation: The animal that kills you don't seem to despawn. At least the last 3 dire wolfs that killed me were still there. Without cheating it's nearly impossible to get you backpack back, even if it didn't vanish.
If killed by zombie, everything sourounding seems to despawn. At least i lately was killed by a zombie and a bear nearby. In this case the bear did also despawn (what was bad, because i already pumped like 20 arrows into it).

Yup. I couldn't remember exactly how it was in earlier versions, but I don't recall it being this hard to get your stuff. As I mentioned above, I did have the backpack showing up when the mountain lion was killing me, but I died 3-4 times in a row (with a long run back each time) because the thing was just sitting on my bag. I do remember there were also some lumberjack zombies nearby and at least for one death/backpack they had killed me, or been involved, and they seemed to hang around as well. Maybe an issue of indoor vs outdoor kills? Not sure.
