So is that the plan? To move all the new road marker stuff to decals instead of blocks? That could be nice as it would open up more space for new blocks, as there isn't a ton of space left for mods at this point with all the new shapes and stuff.

I hope so, because it’s annoying to have those markers take up the voxel above the road. There are probably other cases where a decal would be preferable. The artists recently mentioned needing to remake the existing decals (sometime).

A polite question to the devs:

Why is it that 7dtd has everything renewed, like in assets, POI structures and design, items, weapons, animations, animals, textures, roads, RWG, zds, trees, grass, flowers!, every prop,  shadows, postpro effects, complex LODs and LOD tunning, heavy optimized area loading, memory and CPU optimization to make the Pentagon cry in awe, a skyline to die for and npcs on the way with Skynet-like intelligence and WE STILL HAVE ROAD DECALS (blood, newspapers, cardboard) FROM ALPHA FREAKING ONE?!! (is he shouting? he IS shouting, what an unpolite forum user, good heavens ! -sips tea-).

The artists haven’t forgotten about the road decals. It’s just as well that they’ve waited to address them. Now there are other considerations, namely the lane markers and other painted markings, that could hopefully all be accommodated in an improved decal system.

So long as the game is in alpha, we’re going to see imbalances like this, where some things are noticeably more finished than others.

  3. When you have something like an axe or sledgehammer, that swings across your body in an arc, that’s where it’s very frustrating to have to line up the crosshairs to get a hit. I do think aiming via crosshairs makes sense for weapons that are aimed straight out from your body/eyes. That would include firearms, bows, and spears with which you throw or jab.

I can’t really speak to the difference in A21, because I couldn’t get into using spears before A21. I’m thankful for the redesign, and now I’m using a spear as my main melee weapon. If a spear’s main advantage is superior range, that makes it a very appealing option for me. And I don’t find it more cumbersome to aim than other melee weapons.

that probably can be the case, but why would it start suffering using its native `Metal` with same settings and resolution?

I’m not familiar enough with the game’s graphics to be able to answer that. I do know that the Metal renderer was unsupported until recently... possibly as recently as A20. And OpenGL has been around longer, on more platforms, in general. So it may have more optimizations.

  5. As far as the logistics, I would venture this is a somewhat new situation for TFP as a company. They’ve been known for only one game for many years now. The Fun Pimps have been synonymous with 7 Days to Die, and changing that will be a process. As @Roland alluded, they mean to transition to this new TFP Club for news that spans all the company’s projects. Here’s that link.

    https://tfpclub.thefunpimps.com

It’s early days for sure, but they envision this will be a central source of information as they transition to be a company known for multiple titles.

Also, yes, the fact that people are left to speculate over details of this new 7 Days Blood Moons project is part of a deliberate strategy.

Also, you (or somebody) might need to explain to me why it matters in PvE multiplayer that you are level 30 and I am level 10. I've wracked my brain and can't come up with any compelling reason why it ultimately matters. If we are playing separately on the same server there is no conceivable reason why it would matter and if we team up then as a team we are still together more powerful than the game's threats even if the combined gamestage is a bit higher for me than I would experience alone at level 10. So please do explain it to me and change my mind since you already stated you won't be bothered if I claim otherwise.

Basically, it’s not as fun for the lower-leveled players. At least in the case where they’re a team, they see the higher-leveled players using cooler weapons and gear, and getting more kills. It’s human nature to gauge your status and happiness relative to how others are doing.

This was a while ago, but I remember joining a buddy’s game in coop. When we quested, he wanted me to save all the looting for him, because his character was better at looting. It didn’t matter that we’d share everything in the end; playing second fiddle like that would’ve been boring. Could coop players agree to prioritize everyone's fun, instead of min-maxing? Yes, in theory. Yet I have a feeling other players have been in that situation, where an imbalance in progress does matter.

But it isn't a crafting game. It is a crafting, building, exploring, farming, looting, trading, killing, leveling, mining game. So you aren't expected to craft everything. As I stated, I actually craft more in A21 than I did in A20 and if they nerf (or give us the option to nerf) quest rewards I expect to do even more crafting in the future. But 7 Days to Di isn't a crafting game. It is a game that has crafting in it. As soon as your expectations rise to the level of it being a crafting game you are always going to be disappointed. Same as those folks who want it to be a Stealth game.

It’s the survival horde crafting game. Says so right at the top of the page.

I think a plurality of all discussion on this site boils down to what kind of game people think this is or should be. Which is fine for a game that, after all, is A) a sandbox and B) in alpha. It’s telling that you didn’t even mention survival, which I personally want to be a priority, while you did list farming and mining, which I consider to be... things you can do, if you want to. This alpha I went about 70 days before mining below the dirt layer. And I didn’t need to, anyway. I just wanted a fancy roof with bulletproof glass, for the aesthetics. Anyway, if we accept the premise that the devs are working towards the vision they’ve always had, then I think we have to look at that tagline and say that this aspires to be a survival horde crafting game. Which means that yes, it is a crafting game. An isosceles right triangle is a triangle.

BTW I've noticed that running game on "Metal" caps fps to 60 and for whatever reason it cripples, machine starts to suffer more load...

A frame rate cap may not matter much. Last I knew, no Mac has a refresh rate higher than 60 Hz anyway. They focus on other factors like resolution.

Do you know if the Twitchcon console demo will have bandits or are they not far enough along yet? Though I'm not sure if us forum plebs will be allowed see any of it anyway

I don’t know much but I can say the TwitchCon demo will not have bandits. I think the biggest appeal of the demo, for attendees, will simply be in seeing 7DtD playable on console (again).

  9. It’s interesting to read the variety of responses. Turrets were the big thing I was forgetting. I like to directly kill as many zombies as I can, in part to get the ‘full credit’ for killing them in terms of experience points. But turrets would be a good supplement and a way to use the ammo I already have... once I get everything powered, which always seems to be one of my last priorities.

In prior alphas, I was content to let my specializations emerge organically. First come across a big farm, and then spend points on Living Off the Land. First start a treasure quest, and then spend points on Treasure Hunter. And first find a relatively good gun, and then spend points on the skill for it. A21 doesn’t seem geared to do that. You need to invest in the skill first, so that your chances of finding parts/crafting magazines for that gun improve. It’s required an adjustment in how I play, away from a survivalist mindset of using what comes my way, and a miserly mindset of hoarding my points, questioning if I really need to spend them.

  10. On my latest playthrough, I wanted to be more deliberate about my choice of weapons. I went with pistols. That meant 9 mm and magnum rounds were in demand. I also supplemented that with an assault rifle just for horde nights, so rifle rounds had a use too.

This latest horde night, Day 49, I didn’t have time to put together much new ammo. To play to my character’s strengths, I had deliberately never touched or spent time on a shotgun, so I had multiple stacks of shotgun shells from looting. The only shotgun I had was a pipe shotgun (also looted), and the single shot plus long reload time wasn’t going to cut it. So I crafted a crummy (for my level of progress) quality 1 double barreled shotgun and threw what mods I had on it. It wasn't great, but unlike my pistols or assault rifle, I had more than enough ‘free’ ammo for it.

I’m curious what other people do, especially in single player. Do you also accumulate types of ammo that don’t get used? Or do you use all types of weapons eventually, or stop picking up ammo you won’t use? Do you craft or buy new guns specifically so you can use ammo you have piling up? Do you sell the ammo, or scrap it to turn into something else?

hi, im wondering if you've revisited comsensemod recently since A21 came out? theres still quite a few good ideas in there that could be applied. The number of fixes to the vanilla game has reduced the need for so many patches but until TFP fully catches up or "comes to their senses" lol then i feel like there's room for some common sense still.

Hi ALo, thanks for the post. During A20 I had a go at implementing the changes I thought the game needed. It used ComSenMod as a starting point, and was more focused on fixing things I thought needed fixing than anything else. Sadly it didn’t get far enough to release before A21 came out. I’m playing vanilla A21 now - getting into the late game to explore how things work, and jotting down some things to report as bugs or improvement feedback along the way. Once I’ve had my fill of vanilla once again, chances are good I’ll revisit modding, and hopefully put something out before the A22 cycle takes over. Cheers! :)

Oh, and your LCB...so this is a @%$#ing pita. LCB at least you can just give yourself the dev SMG (super digger) and remove and replace it. Really better to just start a new game probably…

That part can be painless at least. You can craft and place another land claim block (for a cheap 5 stones), and the game will automatically disable your old land claim block, without you having to destroy it.

And if you've not figured it out yet, that voice belongs to Madmole (Joel Heunink). Overseer of all trading posts and other important stuff related to the game (since he's one of the game's co-founders).

Er, not literally. While Traitor Joel bears a visual resemblance to Madmole, they hired a voice actor to record the lines. I believe one guy voiced all the male traders (and for a time, out of necessity, the female one too :)).

  14. My guess would be this is a holdover, from when engines had a quality level. Items with a quality level can’t stack. Now that engines have no quality, it could be worth re-examining this. On the other hand, engines are certainly one of the rarer items in the game, and having one is enough to do whatever you’re doing with it. So maybe they’re non-stackable to reflect that this is an ‘important’ item that should take up its own space.

...EAC can be opted out of but currently there is no option for playing on a non hosting-a-server game so there is no way to opt out of EOS checking for and setting up crossplay compatibility.

Maybe playing in offline mode? Not sure.

What if you edit your platform.cfg file and change

    crossplatform=EOS

    to

    crossplatform=

? I have seen this recommended before.

  16. After deliberation, we’ve updated forum rule 3 to specify that threads in the Mods sub-forum require a download link. This is an acknowledgment that users use the Mods sub-forum as a de facto repository for finding mods to play, at least until a built-in solution like Steam Workshop support is implemented. If your mod isn’t far enough along to have something to download yet, that’s okay but please keep discussion of it in Discussion and Requests instead.

I wasn’t able to find that report, so I’m cross-posting this here from the help desk on gameslayer’s behalf to make sure QA sees it.

Edit: Since Jugginator reacted with a confused emoji, let me try to be clearer. gameslayer sent in a ticket to the help desk that sounds related to this topic. This is what they said:

As soon as Madmole gives the say so I’m sure that Crater Creator will get it started. Are we really ready for arguments over armor, outfits, bandits, weather, and the traders becoming an even more critical factor in the game?

    Of course we are! :)

Getting closer but not yet, sayeth the brothers Huenink. :)
