I found a surface node of plutonium just inside the radiation zone. Up close it looks like a heap of forest ground. Khaine says it can also be found underground near the edge of the radiation zone, so if you didn't want to face the demons you could dig down just outside the radiation zone then dig into the zone (with your hazmat suit on, of course).

1) Hey Khaine, it looks like my vehicle issue might be different from VagabondClown's. With mechanic mastery and grease monkey 3 I can't make any vehicle in the mechanic station, not even a bicycle or minibike. When I have all the components to build a minibike in my inventory and go into the mechanic station the minibike is not greyed out -- it looks like it will let me build one, but on the right hand side of the screen where I would select the number of minibikes to build there is no button to actually do the building. I also can't build the bicycle or minibike at the workbench or advanced workbench. Since mechanic was my third class, followed by civilian, I'm wondering if there's some conflict between classes? 2) And I'm not sure how vehicle mods work, but I can't build any of those either in the mechanic station. They're greyed out. On a separate note, I finally dipped my toe into the radiated zone for the first time today and I was afraid, very afraid! You... you... demon! End game has now taken on a whole new meaning for me. Well done.

I'm level 91 with grease monkey 3 and I've got the same issue. When I'm in the mechanic's station all vehicles and mods are greyed out. Specifically, the words are greyed out but the head icon to the right of the words is white.

Where's that dang steel crafting perk? My big forge is up and running and when I try to craft steel I see that I need to get the steel crafting perk. But for the life of me I don't see a steel crafting perk. There's steel tools crafting, steel armor crafting and titanium crafting but no perk that just says "steel crafting." My science crafting is 3, tools crafting is 3 and weapons crafting is 2 and I'm level 52 so I'm pretty sure I meet any requirements. What am I missing?

In the skills menu, under "Perks unlocked via books - Forge ahead" there is a lock icon to the far right and hovering over that doesn't tell me anything. There is a red check mark for both forge and big forge but in the "level" column for Forge Ahead it shows 0/2, with the zero in red. When I assemble the mats for a forge and try to make it anyway, the forge option is greyed out there too.

I've been playing DF for a few days now and I'm liking it, even though the day 7 horde night absolutely wrecked me (after 1000+ hours in vanilla. Sheesh!) A question for anyone in the know: I know my two classes of survivalist and security don't get the forge creation perk automatically, but I've read the forge book twice and even at level 33 that perk is still greyed out, saying I don't meet the level requirements. What am I missing? Thanks.

It turns out I had downloaded 32-bit Java, but I've now got the 64-bit version and NitroGen works like a charm. The map is certainly more interesting than any a17 maps I've had. Thanks again.

Hi Damocles. I just heard about Nitrogen from the a18 forum and I'd like to give it a try. A question: I downloaded Java as instructed and then ran the Nitrogen start.bat but I get the message that Nitrogen can detect no 64-bit version of Java. But I'm pretty sure I downloaded the 64-bit version. When I tried to generate a world anyway, the resulting radiation.png is just black/empty. What am I doing wrong? Sorry for the noob question. Thanks for your help.
