    save file corruption: sometimes it appears that the game save is corrupted and when the game is launched after system crash and reboot the player is reset to level 1 and the intro tutorial quests are reactivated. player is dropped into the game at the start location. game day is correct, but you're a level 1 with no belongings, all skill books learned have gone away. I have seen this happen as early as day 6 and as far into game as day 21 (horde day incoming, no skills, no belongings, FML).

     

    I have an example that I can provide where I started a fresh game and have backups of my save folder that one can use to compare the pre and post corruption. I'm also happy to provide whatever log files may be helpful.

     

    the other interesting note about this is that it happens most often at the start of day when the game is launched for the first time that day. usually the PC has been in sleep or hibernate mode overnight.

    That sounds an awful lot like Windows not managing the memory properly after coming out of Sleep/Hibernate to me. Can you see if it happens after doing a proper shutdown or restart? I do a mixture of Sleep/Full Shutdowns and I haven't experienced this problem. If it persists on a normal shutdown/restart please re-read the below post and provide all the requested information.     I've played around with this and based upon the empirical data I've gathered it does seem like Windows memory management after hibernation. Though I have seen the crash after a system reboot (once) and the crash after reboot could be another bug. 

    I can reliably avoid the crash if I wake the computer up, spend 30-60 minutes doing other tasks (on the computer, or in the real world) and then launching SDtD. I have not seen a crash when I avoid launching SDtD immediately or soon after computer wakes up from overnight hibernation. 

    any idea how to avoid the corruption of the save file? or is that a separate bug from the crashing issue?

    Save corruption is an issue that is being looked into, though I can't get into specifics at this time. I'd try to eliminate any extraneous processes that are running while playing the game, and avoiding sleep/hibernation in the mean time until a fix is released.

    Save corruption typically happens when the system is interrupted while writing to a save which happens periodically during a playthrough. One thing you can do after a crash but BEFORE YOU LAUNCH THE GAME AGAIN is move the save file and rename the backup file to the name of the save. It's not a perfect solution but it should work in the mean time. Surely not an optimal solution, but it's the one we have to work with right now.

    This still seems more like an overarching system issue in your particular case, and the save corruption issue is something that is being worked on. If you have further issues after that fix is released, please feel free to reach back out.

    As far as troubleshooting your system, your best bet would be to start by checking your hard drive(s), memory, and anti-virus health.

    I haven't had a save file corruption in a long time and have been able to avoid all game crashes for more than a week. At this point I am not sure I can find the right output log for a crash scenario that included save file corruption. 

    If I do see a crash (with or without savefile corruption) I will post the output log to this thread.

    The save file was not  slightly corrupted in the crash from a few hours ago. One item (tier 4 robotic sledge) disappeared from my player's active inventory. Just after I found this out, the game and Windows did a full crash again. So it's not just Windows coming out of long hibernate that causes the crash as this latest iteration happened after a short hibernate/sleep.

    Hmm. I was told long ago to never let the pc go into sleep or hibernate mode, because it can eff-up a lot of things when the machine wakes up. 

     

    So, try a potentially clean shut down instead of the lazy sleep mode?

     

    Just because we have the option doesn't mean it doesn't come without some drawbacks, as your situation seems to support. It's a flawed feature. Don't use it for this game.

     

    Exit the game. Shut off the machine. Startup cold when you want to play again. This game has enough issues without MS features, and the game has become quite stable.

     

    Or complain.  Your choice.

    yep learnt my lesson years ago with hibernation. now i turn off my monitors at night when i go to bed, computer remains on all the time unless i must reboot for something... longest i have gone was over 200 days before rebooting.

     

    but i will not use windows sleep mode nor its screen savers because they use resources as bad as the sleep mode does.

    What about simply turning off the machine? Startup times of operating systems went down a lot in recent years (and you might help save the environment).

    Wow. And I'd say that over the last 200 days I've rebooted around a thousand times. But no sleep mode. Ever.

     

    The person who warned me about sleep mode was a young and 'unschooled' hacker, who today has become a quite influential part of enterprise internet security we hear so much about. Obviously he knew what he was talking about at the time.

    Yes! I can pour a can of tomato soup onto my monitor and claim I've helped the environment!

    Wait what? I'm saying that turning off the PC over night when you are sleeping anyway is better than having it running through at about 30Watt. That doesn't hinder you or me playing a game at all.

    Hi. You're right. I shut stuff down because I don't want to pay for idle energy consumption. It boils down to being frugal I guess. Environmental awareness is good, but thus far it does not affect what and when I play.

     

    Now the tomato soup on the monitor scenaio. Maybe this wasn't the place or time. I kinda like tinned tomato soup. Just keep it off the keyboard. Screws up my gameplay during the key clicks.

    Ok, so your RAM usage isn't terribly high, so it's likely still Windows doing Windows things regarding hibernation/sleep. I'm unable to reproduce at this time, please submit a new ticket if the issue persists after the build that addresses save corruption goes out.

    In the meantime I'd utilize a full shutdown/startup sequence before launching the game when you'd like to play.
