raowyn
1. Are there any TFP licensing concerns around running a (not for profit) dedicated server? 2. What about from the underlying OS? Did any dedicated hosters have to tangle with Microsoft Licensing about anything? Are there any concerns that you know of? What about running from an Azure IaaS VM? meganoth
1. No. 99.9% sure. I'm operating a (closed) server, have posted about this, lots of other people have, even open servers you can see in the mulitplayer menue. No sticky I've read, no dedicated server README said anything about needing to jump over some licencing fence. 2. Hosters pay Microsoft. You pay the hoster to pay Microsoft. When 7D2D is hosted on linux, ideally nobody would need to pay Microsoft, but probably all hosters have special deals with Microsoft where they pay a fixed amount to Microsoft no matter how many servers run Windows or Linux. Probably MS is using its dominant market position for such deals like they use for PCs and could be fined for it but it isn't easy to prove.
