So you can put your auger on some kind wheel frame (need auger and the frame can't be pickup) , and it can drill horizontally , you put number on it's command screen, then it will drill x distance you put , make 1x2 hole, so you can fit on the hole, it need gas can to operate, when gas can is empty before it finished job, it will stop Used this on trench... , you will see metal mole rat digging through earth , make the machine impossible to retrieve without digging it manually Can be used by griefer though, but anybody can loot the auger from this machine when not guarded Also , put chainsaw on it, you will see zombie lawnmower

You could just put it inside your base like you do with a forge to make sure it's safe so no one loots it. Or build a shelter around it if you're using it outside your main base.
