Empra
Because if you have a shovel you can dig out trees in 6 actions, compared to 8 chops with axe, you could balance this by maybe giving 1 less wood on average.
Xamllew
I think it'd be nice to have the tree trunk slightly underground to act as a root, making it less efficient to dig as you'd have to dig 2 blocks down to reach the base of the tree. Realistically and difficulty-wise, 6 hits is way too few to knock down a tree.
Empra
This would also solve the problem but I don't know the technical details of making that possible, it might lead to buggy tree spawns etc, as the holes aren't straight squares so you may have gaps betweent he earth and trees, I think this is why they are placed on top, as it's easier to spawn them in. My suggestion would be much simpler to implement, but yours is the one I would prefer overall.
Odin79
I kind like the root idea, but if they just made the ground around the tree hard to dig that would fix it as well.

Scornstar
Some times you have an axe, sometimes you have a shovel, some times you have less bag space when you have both. Small detail if they change it no biggie, if they leave it no biggie.
