You can get up onto that roof with blocks and stay there for blood moon.
Only way zeds get to you (and they can), is getting on that block wall (easy to knock off), or...
Climbing the ladder of the tower and then jumping off onto the roof. This is hilarious as
a) the stagger/faceplant
b) easy pickins to shoot,
c) sometimes they are completely stoopid and jump off and miss the roof completely.
Now, since you cannot build on that roof, you're easy meat for vultures, and would have to dodge cops.
Leaping spider zombies will also get up there.
Soooo, this could actually be a feature.
(I had fun with it last night. Hmmm, what if...... )

Sometimes you can see it flashing, and when digging same thing if you're on the spot where it would be, it pops in.
Keep the icon red as you dig, and when the circle would be gone, you do get the icon on the ground showing where the chest is.
(that's new)
I don't use vulkan because of the warning, but tried it just to test, and yep the circle is there. (performance was ugh, but..)

I have this same issue, Ubuntu 20, using GLcore.
Tried in Win10 (same machine, dual boot), and the circle appears.
You DO hear the sounds of the circle shrinking, but it doesn't show.
Just tested, and yep, using Vulkan the circle IS there.
Switch back to GLcore, nope, no circle at all.
NV 1080, using their drivers, latest avail.

That one is fixed in Pregen10k right now.
Trader post was moved further over.
Works as it should now.
