  • Game won't start after boot screen [A19-A20]

    Toto

Summary: (a short description of the bug)

Game Version: Tried A20, A19 too. Worked fine with A16 last time I played.

    Platform: Steam

    OS/Version: Windows

    CPU Model: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8400

    System Memory: 16.0 GB

GPU Model and VRAM: GeForce GTX 1070 - 8GB GDDR5

    Screen Resolution: 1920x1080

    Video Settings: N/A - game won't launch.

    Game mode: N/A - game won't launch.

Did you wipe old saves? Yes

Did you start a new game? Yes

Did you validate your files? Yes multiple times

Are you using any mods? No.

EAC on or off? I tried both. When unticking the EAC in launcher, the bootstrap screen won't even load.

    Status: NEW

    Bug Description:

Whenever I try to launch the game, it won't load it.

I get the launcher, then what I call the "boot screen" , with the `Initializing` and the `Waiting for game...` . After like 20seconds, the boot screen fades and nothing happens.

I played the game like 2yrs ago, and it worked well, on same machine. I only tried to run it again this week. It still does not work after the update as of today.

Note that I tried many things:

     - Uninstall it, reinstall it.

     - Removed all old saves and cache.

     - Try another build (A19) - without success, it won't load too, exactly same issue.

     - Remove the `EOS` from the platform.cfg file, and re-run it.

     - Removing EAC in the launcher - it won't even load the boot screen.

    Nothing in the above work.

    Here is the log: https://pastebin.com/sHzyM09x

Note that with latest version, there is nothing in my `Crash` folder, but I got that yesterday's version, if it can help: https://we.tl/t-6NFxJpJd0E (live for one week from now, contains a crash.dmp file that might be of help)

Actual result: Launcher is displayed, then boot screen, then nothing. It fails quite quickly. Note that I can see in the "Task manager" the UnityCrashHandler process quickly pop'in up when it tries to start.

    Expected result: The game starts.

I know this is tedious to debug, so thank you for taking the time! FYI I'm a dev' so if that can help in any way, I can run nerdy things to find out what's going on!

    Thank you!

    Toto.

    Thank you for reporting.

Since you've played the game before in a different alpha version,  lets make absolutely sure that you have a clean slate before we try to pinpoint the issue.

Be careful,  because doing this will delete all your save data as well.

Backup any games you wish to save from Appdata and put them somewhere else, like on your desktop.

After backing up any important save games

    1. Navigate to your main game installation folder
    2. Open the launcher executable
    3. Click Tools, Clean game data, make sure ALL of the boxes are checked as in this picture:unknown.png

Here is a video  made by another QA staff if you prefer a visual walkthrough (it does cover a bit more).

After that, verify the file integrity TWICE through Steam to ensure it catches any invalid files (sometimes it doesn't do it right on the first try). Three times to be sure.

Hi! And thank you for helping.

I did follow what's on the video, and what you suggested, and it still is blocked on the `Waiting for Game` and then crashes.

Anything else I could do ?

    Thank you.

@chikorina Any help here would be greatly appreciated ;)

My post has been moved into duplicate but I see no reasons 😕

    Thank you!

I tried to re-run 7dtd v16.4 that worked years ago and I have this error.log:

    https://pastebin.com/hzFZcazV

Maybe if the error log from the v20 was not sufficient, this one is ?

    Thank you for your help!

The reason it was moved to duplicate was because I had not heard back from you for a while after my comment,  and figured that it was the same as a similar issue with corrupted data that was fixed by deleting all old data.

Please try updating to the current stable,  taking the steps to clear all data again (because you downgraded to an old version of the game once.),  and attempt to run the game once more.  If you are not able to launch the game,  please go to the game folder and try to run the game by double clicking on the 7DaysToDie.exe.  If you are still not able to launch the game,  please post the content of your launcher log.  Your launcher log is inside your logs folder.

Hi @chikorina and thank you again for taking the time.

I cleaned the game data using the launcher. I also tried to verify file integrity x3

I'm now on the latest stable build. (ie. Betas = None).

    Download a fresh GPU driver

Download DDU Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 18.0.5.5 (guru3d.com)

Put the GPU driver and DDU on your desktop somewhere

Reboot into safe mode (quite a few ways to do this, quickest is to hold shift and click Restart, then advanced start up options and follow the trail to boot into safe mode (choose non-networking)

Run DDU to uninstall the driver (follow the default settings there)

    Reboot normally

    Install the new GPU driver

Thank you for the logs.  Please try what Jugginator commented.  I hope it fixes your issue.

If that doesn't work,  please try clearing your registry.  If the last time you were able to launch the game was in A16,  there may be conflict with the game settings.  The registry is located at Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\The Fun Pimps\7 Days To Die

Hi both of you and thank you.

Unfortunately it did not solve the issue.

I followed exactly what @Jugginator suggested, followed the steps carefully, with success, but no luck in the end when I try to start either by the Steam button or directly via the 7DaysToDie.exe .

    I still have the crash.

I also checked the registry to find any 7 days to die  key, but the The Fun Pimps folder (in the SOFTWARE folder) is empty. (and I did not find another places where there is mention of fun pimps)

    See there: https://ibb.co/9vrX0HX

I'm pasting again updated logs if of any help:

    crash.dmp: https://file.io/FEsH2f6OK9vb

Thank you again for your help!

Are there any other games that run okay?

Open a command prompt under admin and run this:

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Run windows update twice (click check for updates twice, even if it says no updates are available)

Disable any antivirus software you have (just for testing, trying to narrow down a dying GPU or bad system software or something at this point)

    FurMark > Home (geeks3d.com)

Try running that stress test, do it at max settings and resolution. You can run multiple of them at once to really stress it out (I think you can with this product). You can try running in Vulcan or GLcore too, although DX11 is where we want to be.

Yes absolutely, this is the only game that do not work for me. I play almost every days to other games (old and new).

I'll do what you suggest and come back to you soon. Thank you!

Looking at your crash stack trace... maybe try downloading and installing this vc package.

I did that before, and re-did it on your suggestion, with no luck so far :(

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

This command finished successfully with everything "repaired" but game won't load still.

Hm. Do you have a custom page file set? If so, turn it to automatic and reboot. If you don't know, it's on automatic.

Does running the game under admin help? If you haven't tried yet. Right click the exe and run as admin

No I'never touched the page file.

I just tried running it in admin mode, it does not work either, but I could not find any logs of the crash, it won't log in the usual folder 🤔

I'm wondering about the stress test, would it make sense that other games are running fine if there was a memory or GPU issue ?

Found the crash logs and dump (sorry it's the morning here :D )

Here are the files: https://file.io/5rdn74hRmAD0 (logs + dmp) when I tried to run it as admin.

FWIW, I ended up switching to Windows 11 and the game runs nicely.

I also experienced the same bug (ie. game not launching on Win10) with another game, so I think something is off with my Windows 10. Not sure what has changed past few months but something is wrong.

    Anyway thanks for your help.
