  • Game crashes at spawn

    Stormtux
    • Version: v1.0 (b309)

Summary: the game crashes after spawning in the word map

    Game Version: v1.0 (b309)

OS/Version: Linux (Fedora workstation KDE spin)

CPU Model: AMD Ryzen 7 3800X

    System Memory: 32 GB

GPU Model and VRAM: AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT with 16GB VRAM

    Screen Resolution: 2560x1440

Video Settings: Tested both Lowest and Ultra

Game mode: Single player tested on Navezgane and a random map

Did you wipe old saves? Yes

Did you start a new game? Yes

Did you validate your files? Yes

Are you using any mods? No

EAC on or off? Tested both, same result

    Status: NEW

    Bug Description:

The game crashes to desktop after spawning in the word map.

It crashes in the word after around 30 seconds on a new game. I can move, open UI elements and interact with the word or do nothing at all, it crashed anyway.

When loading from a save the crash is immediate after clicking the button "Spawn", the word is never displayed.

Uninstalled and reinstalled the game, same result.

Cleared all game data from the launcher and created a new game without touching any options, same result.

Same results with GlCore and Vulkan, EAC on and off, highest and lowest settings, with Navezgane and random map.
Tested with Wayland and X11, same result.

I tried to run the game enabling Valve compatibility tool Proton v9.0-2 and the game works (I played until I completed the first mission without any crash).

     Other info:

    Kernel 6.9.5-200.fc40.x86_64 (64-bit)

    Mesa version: 24.1.2

    KWin version: 6.1.0

This bug report under review is very similar to my problem:

Detailed steps to reproduce the bug:

    1) Create new game, for example Navezgane

    2) Around 30 seconds after spawning in the map the game crashes to desktop even if doing nothing

    3) Launching again and loading the save will crash just after clicking "Spawn"

    Actual result: Crash to desktop

    Expected result: Working game

The games will run on 'lowest' video quality. If I try 'lower', it crashes. It will then crash on spawn even after going back to 'lowest'. I have to clear data (all maps) to get it to run again on 'lowest'.

Even without changing any settings, sometimes when I log back in it crashes, deleting the map allows it to run again.

Thank you for the reply, this is what I am doing to try to obtain your positive result:

    1. Execute the game in "Show game launcher" mode
    2. In the tools tab execute "Clean all data" with all the checkboxes ticked
    3. In the "Start game" tab disable EAC and click the "Run" button
    4. Accept the [redacted] EULA
    5. In the game client open the video settings and switch to the "lowest" preset. Apply and back
    6. Create a new game, keep the default character and the default map
    7. Click the "Spawn" button

After around 30 seconds (quite stable as timing) the game still crashes for me :(

Tried some variations with GLCore or vulkan, video settings set to lowest, high and default with same results.

While I cannot reproduce, I believe with three separate reports from different users we may be able to investigate further as to why this is happening on Fedora.

I may have found something useful. Searching around about this problem I found this thread on a forum about another game based on Unity:

    https://steamcommunity.com/app/892970/discussions/1/4358995462055633032/

They concluded the problem is in a bug in some Mono library calling the system library "zlib-ng-compat" used in Fedora 40 (not sure if I understood correctly, read the various links in the thread for the exact explanation). As a workaround they fixed the crash replacing the stable version 2.1.6 with one at version 2.1.7 downloaded from the fedora buildsystem.

I tried doing the same and now 7d2d is stable with the vulkan renderer and the Ultra graphics settings. I hope this can help the developers solve the problem because I do not know when fedora expects to upgrade the library.

    PS:

If someone wants to do the same i remember that installing non-official packages may damage your system and bla bla bla... i will not be responsible for any damage bla bla bla...

    The packages I installed are:

    zlib-ng-compat-2.1.7-1.fc41.i686.rpm

    zlib-ng-compat-2.1.7-1.fc41.x86_64.rpm

Small update about the the library. Looks like the Fedora maintainers are aware of this problem:

    https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/zlib-ng/pull-request/20

The version 2.1.7 is already in testing for fedora 40:

    https://packages.fedoraproject.org/pkgs/zlib-ng/zlib-ng-compat/

I tried installing the testing version instead of the one i used in the previous post and the game still works reliably.

Thank you very much for looking into this (especially since it turned out to not be your issue)! Looking forward to the Fedora fix and having one less reason to boot into Windows.
