  • Game driver crash when interacting with trader joel

    Summary: When i attempt to interact with trader joel in either a MP or SP map it crashed my GPU driver

    i can reproduce this at will

     

    i followed the instructions on discord to reset the client and security settings with no fix

     

    all the other steps i have done:

     

    • Reseated and swapped RAM
    • Tried it on Vulkan with same result
    • performed a DDU on my GPU and installed latest Nvidia drivers on safe mode
    • Mem86 test on RAM
    • Perfomed fur mark test on GPU and CPU to stresstest 
    • used OCCT to fill up Vram and did that for a hour straight
    • Installed and reinstalled the game several times 
    • Excluded the client from security software
    • Fully refreshed game client
    • Googled for same cases and found 1 case:  

     

    Barring a full Windows 11 reinstall there is nothing left i can do i think

    I can offer a remote session or video call to reproduce if needed or wanted

    Did you try to reproduce without mods? Yes

     

    EAC on or off? Tried both same result

     

    Bug Description:

     

    Detailed steps to reproduce the bug:

    1) load in the game

    2) go to trader joel

    3) once you interact with anything in his immediate area the screens go black, and fans ramp up

    4) OS is still running, i can still hear audio but screen is not recoverable until restart

    5) event viewer notified me that the GPU driver crashed

    6) game can be restarted and played as normal as long as you dont interact with Joel

     

    Actual result: GPU driver crashes, reboot is needed

     

    Expected result: i expected to be able to interact with trader Joel

    as part of troubleshooting i also loaded A21.2 (B37) which was the last A version before 1.0

    i did NOT see the issue there so whatever the fault was introduced in V1.x onwards

    Interestingly checking both logs i see the following sequence (Failed to working as designed)

    Hmm, off the bat your errors are likely GPU related, d3d11 errors are that. Honestly, programs like OCCT/Furmark, although great programs, don't give as reliable of a stress test for gaming as gaming itself does (I went through that a few days ago trying to find a more stable power reduction... 4 hours of stressing through those two lead to no issues, crashed a couple hours running Unity).

     

    Give running without graphics jobs enabled (tickbox in the game's launcher) a try.

     

    You may also want to reduce the clock rate (main clock and vram) and see if that's more stable.

    Followed your advice and did some further testing and think i found a workaround

    i changed the powerlimit for my GPU to 97% and i can now interact with trader joel with no issues.

     

    Once i set it to 100% i get the problem again. 

     

    This is weird to me though as i can play much more graphically intense games and much heavier loads without problems, seems 7Days is very sensitive or causes some spikes? this was after the release to V1.0 also only with trader Joel all the other aspects of the game (including heavy heavy horde nights) run fine even with GPU on 100% power limit 

     

    either way, will leave it up to yourselfs on how you want to take it forward!

     

    thanks for the GPU call out, seems its a "decent" enough workaround as i still get average of 60 to 70 FPS on ultra
