My controller is an Xbox One controller Model 1697
I can confirm hitting M on the keyboard will not cause it to try to force open the On-screen keyboard, HOWEVER once you open the map with the controller, it WILL give you the "the game has to be started from Steam's big picture mode to use the on-screen keyboard" message when you press M on the keyboard to open the map
If any other information is needed please let me know and I will do my best to get it asap for you
