XML "extends" does not extend "effect_group" but can you extend this as well?

I'am experimenting with the XML files and try myself in modding.

 

When using "extends" on for example a Pistol, it seems everything except the "effect_group" and the "passive_effect" entries that are beneath it are extended.

Question: is there a way to also extend a effect_group?
