Is coal + iron -> scrap steel the only way to make steel? if there is another way I'm not seeing it. Don't think it would be underground would it?

My game crashes everyday everytime I start it up. The only fix to make the game run is to reinstall nvidia drivers every day. The error says "Application has been blocked from accessing graphics hardware" and then freezes game. My hardware is 7700k and 1080ti 32gb ram. Any ideas?

Is there any way to turn off this mechanic? I do pretty good during the day, but at night the zombies just wander into my base breaking things and eventually find me. I am dying like twice a night and I can't increase my wellness whatsoever because I can't find anything that does it more that .1 at a time.
