Fascination with games starting you out naked and in the middle of nowhere

Why is there a common theme to survival games where you start off naked in some random location? Is there a story for 7DaysToDie that I missed on this?

The reason I ask is it seems like a forced mechanic to make people learn how to make clothes. It seems like a base set of clothes to start would be fine, and then motivate the player to upgrade/make better cloths through other methods.

It just seems odd I start with a torch and bandages but no clothes. :)

Yes, it is time to get this nitpicky after 5 years. LOL

If we're going there, why does everyone know how to weave plant fibres into clothing right off the bat, but we don't know how to boil an egg? :smile-new:

Yes, the quality of those plant fiber clothes you make day 1 are pretty impressive for someone who woke up naked in the middle of nowhere. Not sure how I pull it off without a thread and needle either :)

Part of the reason I want to start with clothes and not have an artificial mechanic in a game to force me to make clothes day 1 without even gathering more than some grass.

Maybe add an option when setting up the game:

1) Start Naked (drunk idiot who parties too much)

2) Start with basics (normal person)

3) start with basics and survival kit (prepper)

Personally, I think it's just a temporary solution. It would be nice if the final version had some nice introduction story to explain how did you end up naked in the first place and it could be something like this: You're sleeping off a hangover in a hotel room, but you wake up to the weird loud screams from the outside and you go to check out what's going on only to find out that everything turned into hell of the zombie apocalypse. You realize that it's no longer safe to stay there and decide to find some safe place to stay at. On your way you approach couple of people (NPCs) who convince you to join them, but soon it turns out they were just jerks who wanted to trick you, they knock you unconscious and steal your stuff. Luckily for you, zombies didn't get to you when you were unconscious, but when you wake up, you relize that those bandits took everything you had including your clothes and you're all naked. You know that you have to try to go back to your hotel room, maybe even sneak past the zombies to get some stuff that you left there, you will grab a bandage from the bathroom, jar of water, can of food from the kitchen and couple of other things including materials to craft a torch. Game will teach you how to craft a torch as a source of light and to keep you warm while you search for new clothes. As soon as you loot the room, you have to move out. There... One way to explain the start. :)

Makes sense. I suppose it is easy enough to Mod up some starting item changes or a backpack with a few things at every spawn point on the map for those who want to customize the starting experience.

You start out naked: because you have to learn how to use the UI to craft, and how to pick up stuff.

Thats all the lore behind it.

The Player might as well start out in normal street clothes, that have limited protective value.

Or are smelly, attracting zombie, so the player has to get new ones...

Yeah, somehow I can weave grass into clothes, but I can't figure out how to sew actual pieces of fabric into pants or a shirt.

I agree...start us with a shirt & jeans & shoes.

There's no reason to "learn how to craft clothes" in this game...it never gets used, because you CAN'T craft clothes beyond the ones forced on you at game start. Remove plant fiber clothes from the game. problem solved

1) we'd no longer start naked, we'd be wearing clothing that makes sense, though efficiency-wise, jeans/shirt/shoes are on the low end of effectiveness for hot, cold, or balanced insulation, so we'd still seek better clothes.

2) we'd skip a nonsensical part of the tutorial quests that no longer has any real bearing on the game, since you can't craft clothing anyways, and it'd reduce the amount of grass that our character finds a pressing need to go punch.

I think the got robbed and dumped story fits nicely, it also fits with the lore, in navesgane there is 2 factions at each others throats Duke and the white river settlement, you were not a part of either faction but the dukes men are known to be a-holes, so they beat the crap out of you stripped you then dropped you off in the middle of no where for ♥♥♥♥s and giggles. They weren't complete d-bags though so they left you some meager supplies if you happen to survive and wake up, but they figure a zombie will get ya first. They also didn't need to kill you as the government/police is pretty much MIA now.

Yeah that's kinda what I had in my head as well.

Seems legit enough for me.

I have two theories on why the character is near nude.

1) They did get infected with the virus, but are a rare case of being partially immune. The character lost memory of who they are.

2) This one is almost canon! The character is somehow involved with the Zombie outbreak! He ether escaped the research facility in the snow biome of Navazgane, or using technology similar to Half-Life (or the Terminator movie), teleported back in time to save the world. The side effect is memory loss.

Pretty much. I don't think it is a bad thing or if you even need a story behind it. It is basic things to get new players to the game used to things a little and see that they can do all these different basic things. Some probably would go a few days before knowing some of those things if it wasn't in the start up quest for this game and how ever other games have it play out.

Sleeping would just make the game boring and wouldn't work on a multiplayer server.

It could work on a multiplayer server similar to The Forest where all parties have to agree and confirm to sleep at the same time, but I don't see a reason to introduce sleeping to 7D. So much to get done every 7 days before BM that it would be a pointless addition in my opinion.

it's getting clearer and clearer that 7dtd is a feature driven game more than a story/lore driven game.

Adding behemoth, removing behemoth.

Adding mutant bees, removing mutant bees.

Adding raiders, removing raiders.

Removing fat Hawaii tourist, adding fat Hawaii tourist

Nurses dressed like they are from the 50's, but houses have flat tv's and the cars are modern.

Every 6th woman in the world worked as a stripper before Apocalypse.

One of the most common jobs as a man was utility worker, cowboy, farmer or....biker

Oh and yes you can make a camp fire, clothes, stone axe, bandage perfect wood frames, but cant boil an egg. :D

So...Starting out naked is a great feature!

Starting each game is like being on an episode of Naked & Afraid but with zombies!

I don't think it's a common theme. Some games labelled as survival but not really survival like this game, Ark or Rust have you starting off naked but if you look at the real survival games out there, those consistently voted in the top 3 such as The Long Dark, you don't start naked but they don't need you to start naked because their games don't turn into whack-a-mole (zombie) and loot container simulator 10 minutes after spawning......probably because they don't nerf their games when people cry they are too hard.

I blame a lot of changes 7dtd has gotten on the console version even existing, I mean we had that nice right click menu for one alpha, then it came out for console and they removed it in the next pc alpha for no apparent reason. Not to mention alot of the features seem to be more akin to stuff you'd see in console games. Like I always said, if a orignally pc game series is going to get a console version, expect the base game to get butchered to hell and back so it can work on a console for the braindead casuals that usually have them. Skyrim and fallout 4 anyone? Both were horribly dumbed down compared to the last game due to todays console markets.

Even more Proof:
