Gated mining helm? Are you kidding me

I assume you mean to craft one?

Yes. Didn't think something as simple as that would annoy me so much but after 9 day in game and not finding one then getting the last item to craft one to find out its gated till level 30..well that sucked. Eh I ended up spawning it in and throwing away the items to craft it. I can understand most of the stuff being gated but not the mining helm. That's my line in the sand lol

Pretty odd for that to be the thing that makes you draw the line, saw this thread earlier and my only thourgt was 'why is anyone suprised by this, everything else is gated why wouldnt the mining helmet be.'

Well, i understand him.

The mining helm is a need.

Never had a game in A17 where i couldnt find one the first 3 days. But Gating on Level 30 is too much in my opinion too.

Yeah its a need, I also modify my mining helm to have a light value of 0.001 over 0.7, it effects how much it effects stealth, set to 0.001 its just as bright but the zombies don't even notice it. Its my work around until the night vision goggles are fixed, which they been busted since b199 and still are not fixed.

I agree. I have been really wanting to buy a set of NVGs, but they really are horrible now. They were awesome in b199. Obviously, something they changed affected them. I hope they get them fixed soon. Until then, I can just buy them and tweak the XML like this for the mining helmet. Still will wear them though. Because they do take up the eyes slot. That way there is no cheating with wearing nerdy glasses and still getting the benefit.

(This is just an "IMO" here.)

The NVGs were too good when A17e came out. Instead of adjusting them properly, my guess is that they put them back at 16 values (read the item description). I really hope they "split the difference" with us and give us something that helps at night, but isn't exactly the Ubervision in the first release.

The mining helmet IS very desirable. Being able to craft it eventually is nice, but the primary way of getting one is to scour the land. After the cooking pot, this what my priority was in most games. Should I be leveling? building? finding gear? securing food? working toward a vehicle? You may need to sacrifice one of these for the other.

Though the system could use some tweaks, to me, the gating system seems more like a bad luck protection system.

You might get lucky and whatever item early on, but with the leveling system in place, you will be able to craft the item if you don't find it early on.

A helmet with a lamp duct-taped to it, is something even an amateur could do.

Certainly way easier than crafting a forge, bike or crossbow..

With flashlights having drainable batteries as resource, the helmet would also not be so OP.

Light-headgear should then be craftable as soon as some helmet/hat, flashlight and adhesive is available.

You make them? I always found them in loot or buy them from the trader in A15/16.

In A17, just get a few quests done and either you'll be levelled enough to build them or rich enough to buy them.

Just go play the game my way and use the trader or do quests and spend your perk points in what i say...

Quests would be nice to do if they weren't set 1.5 or 3km away for tier ones. Plus if I don't find or buy one from the trader who didn't have any i tend to craft it especially since it was day 9 by that time at 2 hour days. Just really bad RNG. The solution was to just spawn a quality 1 in and trash the items I had to craft it. So far I'm not enjoying this build. The past few have been fine but now it's just annoying. Thankfully I already finished modding files to eliminate level gates, tune up exp on zombies back to 700 and fixed a few other annoying things. Hopefully next build will be better than the current one or atleast they test out removal of the level gates.

Change your settings to sprint during the day and walk at night. Daytime becomes almost exclusively base building/hunting and you raid POI's at night with torches. Its the most fun I've had with the game probably ever. The mining helmet is overrated. I don't even look for one anymore. Although, if I see one at a trader, I MAY buy it (maybe.) You'll never go back to stock day/night setting once you try this.

My opinion of this sort of "cheating"?

Got to say I don't get the big clamour regarding the mining helmet. If I have one I will use it, and in general they are fairly easy to find with the traders likely to have one - although I appreciate RNG is RNG so yeah it's possible to go days without finding/buying one. If I don't have one I just use torches while mining.

If you are talking about using it in dark places (or at night) and not for mining, again I'll just use torches. Hacking the XML just to make your game easier seems like a defeatist attitude. Now it's your game so you are of course entitled to play it exactly as you want - there is no "right" way - but dropping to XML would not be on my list.

Personally I would remove the NVG from the game, I've always hated them as they are so massively OP - and this goes for just about any survival/crafting game - especially so in MP.

It is available as an helmet mod. I use one on my military helmet.

Personally I think it shouldn't be gated in any way. Just a simple recipe, since, as mentioned, it's just duct tape & a flashlight (should be, why the plastic?).

Good tweak would be adding in lightweight 'Construction Hat'. Like the the spazzes wear in-game. Make them maybe 1 point worth of Armor. Have Football Helmet be an early-mid Light Armor helm, and allow duct taping of flashlights to it. Add scrapping to Plastic/s for both.

Have the actual 'flashlight mod' that fits onto Military/Police helms be quite a bit brighter. Leave Construc/Football+taped-on-flashlight remain as is currently. Then there's not only a clear Armor up, but also improved visibility to motivate folks.

Just my .02 cents :)

While they are at it, they should be using the flashlight for the mod. I'd like to know the concept of using a car headlight on a helmet. And what exactly is powering it? ;)

Ha! Haven't looked at the recipe. Thanks funny though :) but hey, would certainly rationalize why the "mod" is sooo much brighter right! :D <--- no idea if it is, I doubt it, just saying it -could- be, heh

Edit: sounds like a Hillbilly recipe for spotlighting deer at night to poach!

hahaha

They are the same brightness, I thought maybe it would be brighter too because of the headlight. but no. At first I just hit b and shift clicked the military hat with the headlight mod on it and it didn't work at all. I initially thought, oh great!. But I took it off, then put it back on and it worked fine.

Either hat if you wear and shift click it to swap, the light won't work. Strange bug.
