7daysguy
Amongst the broken remains of society there could be survivors journals, there could have treasure maps, mining locations, or clues about good places to raid. Inside a military camp, you might find a log that lists the location of a different base. Groups could set out on these 'quests' that could bring them a long ways from their starting point. What about requests for aid by a small settlement? You could help defend the NPC camp against raids of zombies, or maybe just decide to loot the camp yourself! The possibilities are endless. If quest pieces were part of the randomly generated "loot" It could help keep things interesting.
Omega
The books we find are an extremely useful tool for adding content into the game. Like you say, they could provide a way of introducing quests, revealing special POI locations and for players to write in themselves.
bort
This is a great idea. Not so sure on treasure maps, but certainly journals and diaries. ("Dear diary, today I was in the forest, and found a secret military base. I wanted to go and take a better look, but as I approached, a boar ran out in front of me and exploded. When I realized there were landmines there, I decided to leave the place be. Still, I'm sure the place has some great stuff in there, if someone can make it past the minefield alive.")
