NPC Alternative - Vending Machines.

There is a lot of talk for NPC's, trading, money. Here is my take on it. Vending machines - Able to find them in appropriate places such as shops, service stations, et cetera, but fairly rare. - Able to us some sort of currency for them, perhaps hard to find coins found in POI, bags, zombies. - Themed vending machines, e.g. food, drink, ammo, lotto, cosmetic. - Limited stock in each - Perhaps need to be fixed with rare parts to make them work. I like the idea of a rare chance to find gold coins while exploring or on zombies, this ties in with my other "I need purpose" post where at the moment I have no reason to search bodies/buildings, or get excited about searching them. This would give reason to explore, excitement on a find, hard work to save the token for them, have a reward at the end of the day.

Wouldn't work, not the way you imagine it anyway because you could simply break the machine and take everything from inside without paying anything. That's why it would be better to have NPCs that would have hidden stashes, and even if you attack them they could fight back, and even if you win, you still couldn't get everything because you don't know where their stash is.
Well, if once we get power the vending machines are set up with an automated turret, breaking them open would be a very risky venture. Better prep the TNT and pipe bombs, and hope you don't destroy the contents while trying to disable the turret.
I don't think i ever saw a vending machine with a turret in my entire life, it would be highly illegal. And if somebody did place the turret there to guard the machine, then why didn't they simply take everything out of the machine instead of going through all the trouble. It just doesn't make sense. In multiplayer maybe, as a trap, but in single player, no.

I was referring to u2020bullet's post regarding breaking them open vs. paying money. Of course no vending machine has built-in anti-theft of any kind. That wouldn't make sense. But what if the vending machine were NPC-owned? And the turret were rigged by the NPC to ensure fair trade? And the NPC were behind bulletproof glass, adjusting prices / offers accordingly? Because, well, you just can't trust survivors these days.
