Xpath is great for "not breaking existing xmls", but it also adds another layer of complication, so I had anticipated you would edit the xmls directly after having copied them somewhere as a backup, but you did the XPath and that's fantastic as well. My personal workflow is to first backup my xmls, then to edit the XML directly and make sure I get the desired results, and then to make XPath mod lets out of them, then restoring my backups... that way I can make sure any errors I have are localized between my actual edit or an XPath error.
