DarkWestern
Hi everyone, I'm asking on behalf of a friend of mine regarding consolidating cloud saves and local saves. He had a few worlds become corrupted some time ago which were abandoned as lost/corrupted, and he started a fresh game. [ We managed to locate them, and they work now ] The fresh game saves are only available via cloud. We managed to locate the old local [ corrupted ] worlds/saves using the %appdata% folder, and make backups of those worlds, but his game isn't pulling from the same save path in the %appdata% that the old worlds were located, but rather the cloud.... So essentially, we have the worlds from %appdata% but his new world isn't located there, and the game installation path doesn't even contain a folder for saves. We believe it is located in the cloud, and we've tried using Steam to create a backup, but it looks nothing like the %appdata% saves, and we don't know how to consolidate them so that they're all accessible. We've also tried toggling cloud off entirely, and it appears as if the Steam created backup is only able to restore the world into a cloud format, which then leaves nowhere for those old local saves to be placed for the game to recognize them as selectable options. I apologize if this isn't clear enough, and for the overly complicated explanation, but we're out of ideas. Thank you in advance for any info. *edit - He's newer to the game, and hasn't played on any version older than the latest version. Jugginator
As far as I know, our game saves aren't Steam cloud supported, so I'm not sure how that would happen. However, the game itself shouldn't be looking anywhere but in the %appdata% unless that was manually changed. I would get your saves downloaded to the correct spot, and then verify the game files a couple of times in a row.
SylenThunder
No, saves are too large. I believe Steam's upper limit is 1GB, and just the generated map for an 8k world is over half that. And that's only a recent development. A lil over a year ago your basic generated map was 1.2GB or so. That doesn't include any save data at all. It's just the basic world data. DarkWestern
Thank you both for the replies. We are pretty stumped at the moment. The saved worlds in %appdata% aren't being used by the game, and the save that persists in the installed version of the game don't appear there either. We can't really come to any other conclusion than that they must be stored in the cloud somewhere as they are not accessible via local files... meganoth
You can find ALL locations on your computer where *normal* savegames for 7d2d are available if you simply search for typical filenames in those saves, for example "decoration.7dt", "drones.dat" or "ConfigsDump". On Windows the normal File Explorer should be able to do that
DarkWestern
I think perhaps if someone were to list the various places saves could appear might help. As I said, there's nothing in the %appdata% that is being used by the game, so we're not sure where else they could be in order to copy them and have backups. Riamus
If you look at the start parameters for your game (in the game launcher), you probably will see a user data flag pointing to where the saves and worlds are located.

Well, as I've said, we managed to locate two directories. One is the %appdata% which contained the previously thought to be lost worlds, and the other one doesn't contain any files/folders that indicate any kind of saves are being stored there. It's truly bizarre. 3 hours ago, SylenThunder said: In the Pinned FAQ thread... [sP] Where are my saves at? A guide to migrating save files. We will check this out, but I was initially hesitant to reference it due to the article coming up on being 10 years old. Corsin
Hi everyone, and a huge thank you for all your input and links to try to figure out the issue. Also a big apology for not replying to this sooner. I tried searching per Meganoth's suggestion of typical filenames and the saves are in %appdata% and are games that had crashed and we thought lost. I still can't figure out where the auto-saving is going (if that's the right terminology). It's confusing as there's apparently no cloud saves and at the same time, during a local search, only 1 location appears (above, "crashed" games) so I still have no clue how or where my games are saving. Thank you again for your input, and thank you DarkWestern for starting this thread. Maybe it'll get resolved somehow when A22 releases and the game updates...we'll see. Until then, I'll just rock on and have fun
meganoth
As @Beelzybub said your logfiles will tell you exactly the location used. And the logfiles currently are still saved in <program folder>\7DaysToDie_Data. All the logfiles also have the current date in their name so you could just start the game, then search your hard disk or SSD for a file with the current date in the form "yyyy-mm-dd" in its name and should find the logfile that was just created. Look into the logfile and search for a line with "... INF Started thread SaveChunks ...". It will show you exactly where your current save IS stored (and I would bet it will be in %appdata%, not somewhere else). Corsin
Thanks again for that advice. I will get the time to look a little later. As I recall, when DarkWestern and I were looking around, there actually was no SAVE folder which we thought was strange. I'll let you know!! Jugginator
Honestly, if you install the game naturally and do not mess with any configuration, it will be using roaming appdata to save games/worlds/downloaded content from servers/screenshots and whatnot. It would help to have both a log file and how you two went about setting everything up. If you have a symbolic/junction link to put appdata files elsewhere, there's that possibility too. Corsin
Hi Guys. When I go to %appdata% and in to the saves folder, there is one folder called Empty and one folder called Old Laredo County. Old Laredo is an old save (and one of 2 games that crashed and thought lost but found when DW and I were looking for current game save). My current save games are not there and nowhere to be found. I opened log files in the appdata path and tried searching INF Started thread SaveChunks as suggested but it said not found. I opened 7Days To Die_Data and the only folders there are: Bluffs, Bundles, Config, ItemIcons, Prefabs, Stamps, UMATextures, World and the 7dtd_icon I was going to upload pictures and the most recent log, but I dont see an upload option for pictures or files anywhere....sorry. So I'll just copy the whole most recent log in to here....I apologize if it's rude: EDIT TO SAY: Windows (C:)_Program_Save has some save games but not all. When I bought and downloaded the game, I did NOT change any save game path or any other settings at all (other than game options of course from the menu when you open the game) and I always play by double clicking an icon on my desktop. Adding images is done through the link at the bottom of your message that you are typing. Anyhow, you listed folders in your data folder, but did not include Mono, which your log clearly sees. This suggests you might be looking in the wrong place. Press the start menu and paste this in and hit enter: C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/7 Days To Die/7DaysToDie_Data/ Based on your log, you should certainly have a Mono folder and it also seems there is a Mods folder, but inside some other folder there, which is a bit strange. The log lists part of the path as "..." so I can't say what folder it's located in. Your serverconfig.xml file in your game's EXE folder should also list where your saves are located. Search for "SaveGameFolder" in that file and you should have the path listed. Note that if you have the game set to load an alternate serverconfig.xml file in your startup parameters, you might need to open that file instead. You do have your serveradmin.xml file located in c:\program\saves\ folder for some strange reason (definitely NOT a default location). Considering the path includes "saves", you might find saves there as well. All in all, it looks like a very strange install of the game and not standard paths for various things, which is odd if you say you didn't change anything. Maybe some mod moved things around. Looks like someone added a custom (and bad) path for your saves. The -UserDataFolder was modified. This is usually done in Steam in the games Properties/Launch options menu. If you are wanting to set a custom user data folder, the "Mods" folder would not be a good choice.
DarkWestern
Howdy everyone, thanks for all the replies! Work has been a nightmare this month, and I've not had much time to check in... So it looks like somehow the default path for saves was altered at some point... I am thankful for your expertise, everyone. Corsin and I have been trying to figure this out for quite some time, and we've met with failure while trying to install very simple mods like the bigger backpack mod. I wonder if the bizarre pathing has something to do with those failures as well... I suppose if, for what ever reason or another, the saves are located in "-UserDataFolder=C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\7 Days To Die\Mods" it may be a good idea to back the contents of that folder up somewhere else and delete it entirely. One concern I have is that upon playing again, the game may auto save back to the bizarre paths... I believe we had tried uninstalling the game entirely, and still couldn't figure out where they were, is there any way to tell the game where saves should be, or does it just scan the entire 7D2D folder for them? That path is probably set in your launcher, though it could also be changed in one of your settings files (I can't think of the exact filename atm). As long as you edit that, it will save to wherever you set it to.
