FPS Lag in large cities

Recommended Posts

I would post in General support, but this is more of a question than a bug.

I experience lag in large cities. The thing is is that the lag is just dipping into 40FPS rather than the locked vsync @ 60FPS everywhere else. I do have the view distance maxed, that may be the problem as well.

I was curious if I disabled Vsync would that make a difference, or could I lock Vsync @ 30FPS somehow? Sounds like a dumb question I know.

Alpha:
A20 B6

System:
Windows 10 x64
GTX 1080 Stock
Intel i7 9700K Stock
32 GB DDR 3200 Stock

It´s the glass blocks. Nothing you can do about. Should be fixed in A21. This might help, didn´t use it myself so far though: https://www.nexusmods.com/7daystodie/mods/2397

Thank you.

I tried the mod and it increased maybe  5-10 FPS, but knowing that constant 30 FPS is all you really need for smooth gameplay, I do not understand the dip from 60 to 40 being such a slideshow.

Maybe I will load Fraps and see the difference easier.

I know what you mean, i get like 40FPS in the cities wich shouldn´t be a problem at all. It´s kind of a weird lag issue, feels like walking trough kinda liquid jelly with tiny stutters. Really hope this get´s fixed for good.

Yeah that would be great, but I am in A20 for quite a while, so without a patch for A20, you have to start a new A21 game.

Turn off the option for dynamically generated imposters.  Whatever they're called, I don't recall.  It was new in A20.  Once you get in a city, it spends a ton of CPU time trying to render mid-distance imposters instead of letting them pop in when you get close enough.  It makes the world more immersive for sure, but lagged me terribly.

As everyone else has alluded to, it's a CPU load issue. To expound, it's actually a single thread performance issue, so if you look at aggregated graphs of CPU utilisation, it looks low.

The two options then, of course are lower the load, or raise the capacity.

The suggestions thus far are to lower the load. All good ones known to work. (Well, I haven't tried the mods, but the settings are)

What hasn't been said yet is that with a 9700k at stock, you can probably eek out another few FPS by overclocking. If you really want more, disabling 2 or even 4 cores can give you even more headroom to overclock.

Also, you mention 3200Mhz RAM at stock. No mention if that means 2133Mhz stock, or 3200Mhz "XMP stock". (Not all motherboards use the XMP speed by default, even if the memory is XMP capable).
