Items that should require books to craft.

Sledge hammer Its the most powerful melee weapon in the game. Even on insane scoring many 1 hit KOs to the head. The iron club is more expensive to make and does less. The hunting knife requires a book and is worse. Explosives (Pipe bomb/TNT) Reduces griefing If you don't know how to make bullets without a book why would you know explosives? Both are very powerful
Sledge really shouldn't require a book. you are sticking a lump of metal on a stick. it may be over powered but complicated to make it is not.
Logic like that doesn't really work too well though when the crossbow is made from sticks and two pieces of grass. Or the hunting knife or you can melt a barrel of oil down into 6 separate gasoline cans from the metal in the barrel?

Spiked club and hunting knife both need some love right now I totally agree. Not sure about the sledge needing a book as it is quite slow and quite a stamina hog to use (as it should be). Knives should definitely not require a book (as they currently do) as they are in no way impressive. The explosives however I have do disagree with needing a book. I currently know how to make a pipe bomb and TNT in real life (though the in game TNT is not really TNT, as it is made with gunpowder it is really a black powder charge), but I would have a hell of a time trying to make a decent fire axe or a crossbow. Making explosives is actually much easier than many of the things we craft early on in 7DTD. The tough part is getting the nitrate in significant quantities which the game does make easier than it is in the real world.

its probably more like pouring the fuel from the barrel into 6 smaller containers. The sledge I agree is not complicated, the same result can be gotten from a wieght at one end of a olympic bar or screwing a bowling ball at the end of a hard wood stick.

Perhaps books to make proper melee weapons such as swords, clubs, metal spike traps, spring loaded traps, trip wire traps, explosive traps, wood framing, canning foods. Hell I would not mind our only skill in the beginning being scavenging, and we must learn everything else. I personally don't know anyone who could make a stone axe or crossbow off the top of their head right now. I know many who don't know how to frame a house. I know many with no concept of how to make or use a forge. Perhaps we start with a military surplus entrenching tool (shovel/pick/axe combo) which is un-craftable and have to take care of it till we find the books to learn the skills we need to make replacement tools.
