Is drowning still a thing?

Maybe this is known to all but me which is why I refrained from creating a bug report, and of course the debuff drowning is still a thing.

What is not is actually dying or losing health for starters. Instead, the routine just starts anew after the 16-minute debuff has expired:

cannot breathe white - cannot breathe yellow - drowning.

What I meant, to make sure, is that I am really unable to die by drowning.

Submerging just causes an endless repetition of the three debuffs in succession ( the third one lasts for 16 minutes if you do not, you know, die) with no repercussions whatsoever. It stops when I get to the surface, so apart from not dying everything behaves as expected.

I kept noticing this from A19.2 or so on, local game as well as remote dedi; admin ( not in god mode, of course) as well as making sure I could not 'dm' even if I wanted to; completely new maps with no outfit or perks at all as well as maps played up to day 90. No local mods, and only Alloc's for the dedi.

Now that it has been confirmed - thank you, Boidster, and sorry for your demise - that not everyone is experiencing this behavior, I at least do know how it is supposed to be.

I will do a client reinstall, although I would expect the server - which incidentally had been reinstalled just a few days ago - to ultimately decide about my passing away, so let's see...

But first, I have a rather long bridge to finish ( no kidding, you do not discover you have the lamest super power ever and walk out without the slightest of benefits).

just a small hunch....
disable any mods (if you have/use any) and try and/or make sure "god mode" is off (as in god mode you will act as if drowning but you dont die.) if you are in the water that is.

"turn DM off in console even if you are not using the godmode key"

Huh, that is bizarre. My test was a local sandbox world (Navezgane) and I did in fact have 'dm' active, but God mode turned off (I had used it to zip across the map quickly to some water). I didn't post the last screencap, but it is of my dead body at the bottom of the river. Didn't want you to think I took it down to 1 health and then chickened out!

What about bleeding? Go walk into a spike trap a few times. Or dehydration? Painkillers can dry up your water pretty quick. Will that kill you?

I have gone through several kinds of demise:

Zeds and falling from great heights finish me no problem.

Traps can and will kill me as well as dehydration or starving.

( The latter had already been put to the test earlier.)

Started a new local game today, so still no mods, making sure again no 'dm' is active. All is well, so to speak, until the yellow running out of air debuff expires and the actual 'drowning' begins.

Warning: explicit visual content showing absolutely no deaths.

Spoiler

Screenshots have been scaled to keep this at least somewhat sleek - I am not playing at 400p resolution.

I had taken some hits en route which is why some health is missing from the start. On the other hand that shows I am actually healing despite the massive negative Healing/s.

Even did a bit-compare between local buffs.xml and the one on a dedi with fresh install. They match.

Can confirm - changing to "No Player Killing" in my single-player game removed the damage from drowning. Dehydration still killed me though. This gotta be a bug.

Edit: I'm working on a modlet to fix it. I've got it mostly working, but it's not as smooth as "normal" drowning and it doesn't have the blood-spatter effect for some reason.

The radiation zone damage is applied in the same way as drowning damage (via <passive_effect> in the buff) and with "No Player Killing" active, the radiation zone is really just a nice way to get a tan, apparently. No damage taken.

Okay, maybe not a bug? Seems to be a strange setup, though, since starving/dehydration/burning/etc. will kill a player, but not drowning and radiation. From the buffs.xml documentation (at the bottom of the file):

Quote

DAMAGE TYPES

Any buff that has a  <damage_type value=""/>  that is not null will be taken out with the  RemoveAllNegativeBuffs  action.
This is also how buffs interact with the player kill / friendly fire settings.  Only positive buffs will go through unless set to hostile.

That last line seems...suspect. In my  modlet I changed drowning damage to a <triggered_effect> and it worked even with no player killing. Several other negative buffs (like starvation) use <triggered_effect> for damage which is why I explored that method. But obviously they're not positive buffs so I'm not sure what to make of the comment above.

Okay, well this modlet seems to 'fix' the drowning bug for the most part. (Edit to add: that is my own modlet at my Dropbox.) Only two differences from "normal" drowning:

1) You will not get the blood-spatter effect; near as I can tell this only applies to passive_effect damage, which doesn't work with No Player Killing

2) It will not increase the damage rate as time goes on - it just does 5 HP of damage every second, so 20 seconds for a full-health n00b to get out of the water

I'm an apprentice modder at best; I'm sure an expert could figure out a better way to solve this until TFP fixes it (assuming that they do think players ought to be able to drown - or die from radiation - in NPK games).

Wow, you have been busy.

Those are very interesting insights, though I will not pretend to get all and every implication yet.

Thanks for your efforts and big thanks for the modlet.

I have also confirmed the NKP setting to be the culprit for me, and the code works as advertised.

Great work!
