a19 - 112 mods - Some Pics, etc.

I decided to see how many mods I could load at once and still get a "playable" game (e.g. no terrible mod collisions, player is not super OP day 1) that leans towards a harder/more immersive (mostly immersive. I guess "grindy immersive"?) game play mode to shake things up a bit.

Disclaimer/shameless promotion: I maintain/made several of these mods I'm using, as I'm also trying to see if any of my mods conflict with others, play-test/balance my stuff, etc.

 

If I don't get super frustrated by getting my butt kicked all game long: I'll keep taking pics when I run across something a particular mod added/changed in vanilla, or if I just get a good scene of something fun

 

I have set the game to (changes from vanilla settings)

- 4 hours of Daylight (per day)

- Player 150% block damage ( drop a little grind)

- 50 minutes days (I dunno why. speed things up a bit?)

- 12 zeds per player (its just me)

- Drop on Death: Backpack only

 

So far here's some results:

 

First off: There are a few mods you can't "see" that are making life interesting. I chose these to semi simulate "permadeath" but I don't want to play hardcore permadeath all teh way. This is a nice approximation IMHO that keeps you wanting to stay alive, but also lets you keep your base/map when you die.

These two basically mean: Every time I die, I get sent "out there", naked and afraid, and have to run back home because I can never put down a bedroll.  Because I chose to keep my toolbelt (on death), I tend to keep different stuff on it than a normal game. Now I keep some ammo and a weapon that goes with it on it.  And since I get a complete skill reset on death, death really really really sucks. The end result is I would rather not die, and not dying is literally the only way I can work up to crafting a freaking workbench, which I have been dying to do since I can't find a working one!

 

Anyway, back to pics:

From the "SnufkinCustomZombiesPLUS_A19_2020Dec17" mod: A flaming pumpkin head zed thing ran me out of a factory I was trying to clear.  I'm not powerful enough to take any of Snufkins on yet as their HP is generally 3-10x? more than regular zeds. As soon as I saw it tearing through a door I ran all the way back out of the maze and jumped the fence.  It chased me for quite awhile, the @%$#.  I felt safe enough taking this pic from this far away ;)

From the "VehicleMadness_Overhaul_Beta1.1" mod: Here's the first running vehicle I came across (took awhile, but not too long.  slightly after the first bloodmoon). I believe it was originally made by Guppycur? as it has his face on the doors :) I've been using it for everything and have stopped dying more now that I have it. I use it to run away a lot.  Several times I have found myself driving around and suddenly I'm being pelted by some flying Snufkins zombie and this vehicle is literally the only reason I live through it.

I liked this scenery.  I had finished narrowly escaping the creamery on the left. I was about 3/4 of the way to the loot room on top and I think a horde ran into the building. I've learned not to try to fight more than 1-3 zeds at a time, or I will die.  The "cloudy red darkness" is not the blood moon coming, its morning breaking? and my "Doughs-PunishingWeather-Core" making the hazyness and and "Doughs-Buff-Ambiance-DarkerNights" mods making...wait for it...darker. The gun is from "FirearmsExpansion3.1" I think and is the only type of gun I've been able to find (I have 3 of them)

Just another shot at what a typical "day" looks like. Its in the desert and it tends to go "cloudy white" when its not super dark.

Here I am in the Creamery (mentioned above), before I was overrun and screamed like a baby when they eat their first lemon.  I wasn't holding a crudely made flaming torch because it's in style for 2021... I was holding it because ...

This may not look impressive to you but it was a wonderful moment for me.  You see, I had finally found some hammers (more than one!) in a Working Stiffs, so I drove home as fast as I could and finally, at this point in the game, was able to upgrade a wood frame to a wood block, thus completing that part of the initial starter quests.  This is due to the "Khelldon-GetFramed" mod, that requires nails to build frames, and then "nail them together" because you can't build out of them without nails, and but also because you can't use a stone ax to use nails.

I can finally start upgrading my base (a pawn shop)!  There's quite a bit of damage to it already.

 

Most of my kills have been "me standing on a roof and hitting zeds with a club/arrows". Nothing honorable, but its mostly necessary.

Also: As you can see on the toolbelt, I found a bike!, courtesy of the "Ragsy_Find_Bicycles" mod. I'm saving this bike at the base in case I die and my vehicle is far away (as it always seems to be when you die)

I was about to head out and ... the day and time is missing due to my Doughs-UI-Hide-TheDayAndTime ... apparently it was blood moon night!  I was glad I did not go far from base before I noticed. I swear the "warning" sound did not trigger.  This is a shot on the roof of the base, thought the colors/blending was cool

Bloodmoon horde wasn't too bad (still hiding on a roof).  I decided I needed to move indoors due to flying creatures that would surely arrive some day, and I found a hidden panel I had missed when I looted the place.  I was so ashamed of my sloppiness. I almost ate glass to punish myself, but I can't afford to lose all my skill points.

Later that day while trying to complete a beginner quest via one of the 21 "White River Tools Of Citizenship" mods (see quest to the right), a random Thumper crashed nearby, which is always exciting to see/hear (Courtesy of "TelricsThumper2.0A19").  I was not ready for this but it seemed fun (and I always jump into a zed fight like a fool) to try to harvest the thumper before it disappeared.  After fighting 5-7? Thumper Zeds (stamina loss is killing me) I was badly hurt and had to go back to base for healing supplies. I was infected but luckily I had 2 herbal antibiotics that saved me.

While healing and chilling on level 1 of my 2 roofs (TWO ROOFS @%$#ES!), a nasty looking super giant Snukfins boar with a headlight (I guess you could say it was thinking... ahead) mulled around.  I left it alone, but stared at its majestic presence for a bit. It looks small here because it's 5 miles away.

I decided to craft some food to consolidate supplies.  I find its nice to take a break from zed killing to just craft stuff, hang around, watch the torches flicker. It looks like I'm awash with food, but its deceiving. A lot of the items are low health/food value, and the raw vegetables I found out I can harvest by hitting grass (random food drops from grass). I don't have any points into cooking yet either.  Anyway, I'm not sure what all foods come from which mods and I'm not going to point it all out but here's all the food specific mods I loaded:

On a side note: I had the nuka cola mod (not sure the name right now, it comes with a nuka cola factory prefab) in an earlier run of getting all these mods together. Its also compatible with all of these, it appears as I don't think there were any loading errors. I took it out as I restarted and I forgot to add it back and the map was already generated :(

 

On another side note: The top left yellow icon has a moose on it and is called 'Moose-terd" I believe.  Very nice (light applause).

Some time has passed. In the darkness and in the distance I saw a "zombieGuppyBelle", whatever the hell that is.  I believe probably comes out of the Community Creature pack, specifically the "0-CreaturePackHumans" mod. At least I was to to identify it at a distance due to the "KHA19-HPBars" mod.  I did not approach as I was not there to fight, I was headed back home after visiting the trader.

At the trader I was able to turn in my first quest and I received a Sealed Citizen crate (From the White River Tools Of Citizenship Quest/mod).  I opened it at the base ....

I also received from the trader, a White River Citizenship card, which apparently unlocks a lot of separate quests.  I chose the FireAxe quest because chopping trees is tedious and I have to go out a ways to do it, so hopefully this will make this task go by faster. Its also a relatively easy/safe quest to complete for me.

I then started fortifying the base more and trying to unlock higher Intellect tiers to craft electricity/generators and traps, because if I die I cannot craft any more for awhile.  My base is small and uninteresting right now so I'll skip photos of it.  Hopefully more to come... I did discover what I think is a tiny bug in MeanCloud__Mining, which I have submitted as an issue on Github and I will fix once a20 comes out.  Hopefully soon I can start building some ore miners, and maybe go fishing...

I was dead within a few hours.  Another Blood Moon snuck up on me, I fought and won and thought it was over.  As I was repairing, another horde showed up and I was not prepared. I thought I could handle it with a baseball bat and my suual stuff but I was out of arrows and I fell through a hole and had to run around on the ground. The stamina losses were too great and I could not make it back to the base roof, but I managed to make it to my vehicle. As I was driving away some Snufkins zed riding a ?flaming bear? was chasing me, along with 2-3 vomit vultures which I cannot outrun.  I got out with about 20 health and it was over quickly.

I was able to run to the vehicle without issues and made it back to base.  I realized that I needed to do more fortifying and prep as my current zed fighting position was becoming untenable. I needed more bullets as well. I decided to go get wood and pick out some mining locations, and pick up an air drop. During the quiet, a majestic helicopter crash occurred, courtesy of the TelricsBiplaneAndHelicopterA19 mod, and it was very exciting to see... the pic doesn't do it justice.

On my way to the air drop, another one happened.  yay!

A lot happened in between that second plane crash on this pic. I got to the air drop, and on my way back I noticed a huge building in the forest apparently just outside of town.  I didn't get a pick of it because I forgot to as there was a bear at the entrance.  The bear hit the building? (something did) and it made the "protected zone" sound. I circled the building and there were doors on all sides.  I managed to get inside and there were 4 traders in the building!  Even though there's no pic, I know this has to come from the COMPOPACK A19 CP47 mod/pack. As I looted and death with traders, the building exits became surrounded by Snufkins zeds, and bears/wolves.  They were all fighting and hitting the base. I was trapped, and I couldn't easily buy more stuff as I was already encumbered and slow moving. I tried to get out, drop my bicycle and pedal to the truck. I died again :(

If anyone is still reading this, I figure I might as well post all the mods I'm using, as I'm becoming terrible at taking screenshots when I need to :). Note that teh game takes awhile to load up with this many. The goal is to see how many can be loaded at once (have a unique, if not confusing game with everything happening), and I'm sure I coudl load more, and also to fix any of my own mods that collide with others (I have made some small fixes).  So far I feel that game/loot/fighting/etc has been pretty balanced and I'm having to change my normal play style, which is a nice change.

More pics later when I play again... had some setbacks...

It seems the thing that's continually killing me this early in the game is the Snufkins "zombieGeist" (a flying guy in a black coat that shoots electricity). I cannot outrun it even in my vehicle, which he blew up in 1 shot :(

 

Sooooo... I'm turning him "down" a bit ... as I'm still so weak (weapon wise, car wise) that this is basically "instant death from above".  I can even survive Archon attacks if I'm paying attention. The Geist just attacks relentlessly in my car (like a vulture...as its based on the vulture) and kills too quick for me to even try to find cover. Its killing "exploration" in a world this dark (4 hours max daylight) as I cannot seem him from a distance... anyway...

 

zombieGeist is now:

I wanted to see what “pushing it” would feel like.  I could probably add a lot more mods (and I may still) but left out some as they were likely things I would never use (more lights, specialty blocks) or would “buff” me too much (make zeds walk slow, super powerful guns, etc).  I wanted to make it a hard game. Almost like a “poor mans survival overhaul”, and I figured I could showcase all the mods a bit to give them some visibility. 
 

anyway, to answer your question: I haven’t seen any obvious FPS drop in game. The only thing I notice is that it takes a much longer time to start the game.  Like 5 minutes from “continue game” to actually being in the game. However, I’m also not running on a super powerful graphics card, so I have the graphics turned way down, and am not running full screen.  I get maybe 30 FPS average, even without all the mods. 
 

im also on Ubuntu, not windows, which I hear gives a little performance boost (maybe 10- 20%) and I have 16 GB of memory which using this many mods likely uses more memory. I’m not sure why kind of difference it is though. 


as a side note: it’s actually pretty fun. I’m having to change my play style quite a bit as I don’t know really how to deal with all the unknown content. I didn’t research all the mods beforehand, just loaded them in and took out all those with obvious conflicts. I had Tactical Action in there initially, but due to conflicts and some Ubuntu only graphics issues I had to pull it out. Same with Sorcery: had to pull due to too many Ubuntu graphics issues. Also: there are some weird conflicts and issues I’ve run across, like some guns not working (won’t load their ammo). I dont know why, but likely some weird conflict. It actually makes it kinda interesting as you don’t know if spending time crafting an item is going to pay off :).

A lot has happened since this update.  I have died like 5 times due to falling off my horde base and not being able to make it back ;) Anyway...trying to continue the theme,,,

 

Here's the view from my bicycle, courtesy of "Ragsy_Vehicles_First_Person_View" mod.  It appears only to work with vanilla vehicles, which is all I have available to me right now. The immersion when getting on a bike is really nice.  Hopefully I will be able to get the other vanilla vehicles and try them out!

I decided to craft some "special traps" from the "13erserk - Traps" mod.  I made a steel plate and a steel spike plate to protect this block, which was my favorite block because it leads to the roof.  When zeds start jumping up here, my blade trap hits them, and then I hit them as they ascend.  At least that's been the plan. The zeds really liked destroying this block, thus not being able to go through the path I made for them.  I learned that I reinforced this block too much, and so they rarely jumped on it, instead choosing to destroy the wall behind it ( and leading to one of my deaths). SO: if you're going to reinforce a very small path, make sure its weak(er) that the other paths to you!

Here's a nice mini shopping mall I found, likely from COMPOPACK A19 CP47.  I have destroyed some of the lower decor, and someone a long time ago had had enough and angrily flipped a table. I went into the basement and almost died to some very eager dogs, so I haven't been back yet.

A lot going on here.  I had to make a storage box just to hold all of the different types of bullets I keep finding.  I believe this is due to "Harry's New Calibers" but there could be another mod adding to this.  I'm not really sure anymore ;).  Additionally, I was *finally* able to craft a gun (see tool belt, slot 2), which may be coming from "FirearmsExpansion3.1" or Harrys (not sure!).  I have some more weapons: A Katana and a "rail gun".  I think the rail gun is coming from "Snufkin_Weapons_Xpansion_A19_Stable_2020Nov23".  I don't have a lot of resources to craft bullets for it, but I keep a few rounds in there in case I run across a super strong Snufkins zed when out and about.

 

Additionally: I'm carrying some steel polish ( haven't used it yet for steel upgrades: I'm not ready) that's coming from "FGStainlessMod"

 

Additionally ... I decided to add more mods .  I'm up to 143 mods loaded simultaneously right now (I'll update the list soon, the one(s) above are out of date) but one of those also making an appearance is to the far left, which is the old "item combiner" that's coming from "Stallionsdens Combine Return"

 

Oh, I died a lot again. . On horde night I fell off my base because zeds knocked a block out and I thought I could jump over it....and I was in some bit of a hurry...and I did not make it. I spawned "out there" and a wolf? was near me, and attacked.  The horde spawned right there..and I died again...and I spawned "further out there"...and repeat death sequence.  I finally made it home though.  I found out I don't lose all my skill points on death but I DO have to re-allocate them, which is kind of nice as I found out I don't have any antibiotics, and I need to make some....

so....

I added more mods (new list below) and had to remove some due to conflicts.  We're now up top 143 mods ;0 Hopefully its "mostly playable" again....and I plan to keep going/posting. Several things have occurred since my last screenshot:

1. I have died a few times :(. I've spent a lot of time mining and crafting bullets, arrows, blunderbuss ammo as I realize I really need them for horde nights. I just cannot melee enough.  Moved blade trap around for better horde night damage as my base is taking a beating.

2. I was fighting an unexpected wandering horde on the rooftop trap area, and during reloading my blunderbuss.... I.... I threw my katana with flaming mod down onto the ground with a misguided keypress.  When I went to retrieve it...it had despawned.  This is a major setback.
