Making zombies smarter

I see in the Alpha 20 Dev Diary, Zombies will be able to crawl through 1m blocks. Good move. 

 

Got me thinking about other ways to boost zombie IQ. I'd suggest having zombies be able to create their own path to you to add another layer of difficulty.

 

For example, allow zombies to climb damaged blocks. 

 

After a block takes x% damage, the block essentially becomes a ladder for the zombie. Basically using the old punch holes in a verticle surface and then climbs via the holes he/she made.

I envisioned making one of those construction zeds a “Doozer” (after Fraggle rock) where every time he attacked, a block would drop (“he built

it”). In theory he might be able to pile up enough blocks that zeds could climb the walls of your base.  I failed to get it to work. I Also tried making a vomit cop vomit blocks of dirt (also to possibly pile up outside of your base, maybe cause general pain on your base itself) but that failed as well. ...

 

anyway: it’s not making them path smarter, per de, but another way to try to get them to climb on their own, which I think is a good idea. I put all of this here to possibly inspire someone to come up with a way to get them to climb. Maybe the zeds could drop ladders.... or damaged blocks (or the base frame block, after the block is mostly destroyed?) could be modified to make them all “climbable” by zeds?  Or bring back the old “spider climber” mechanic? I’ve seen zeds pile on top of each other to get up about 4 blocks, but not any higher with the current AI.

Im all in for improving the game, but i think there should be a threshold that shouldnt be crossed over. Zombies are dumb creatures, they shouldnt be engineers 😉

 

There's enough of the Blood Moons hordes identifying the shortest path to you, through the weakest defenses and working with that to get to kill you. Same for piling up to reach higher spots, à la World War Z. Beyond this, i think it loses its purpose and zombies arent really zombies anymore. It looks silly imho, no offense.

 

If people really want smarter threats, then i think this is where Bandits get introduced and turns out the Pimps are officially working to have them active by A21, if im not mistaken. It wont be for A20 though, they were clear on that. Of course i wish it would be sooner!

 Well you can already mount blade traps on walls. Just create a couple of existing holes in the wall that either have blade traps or, if you want to be really mean, have a shotgun turret positioned 1 block away.

Don’t need a mod for that, I had a zombie bear glitched into a trader’s post on my current play through.  I thought I might have left the door opened but it was closed after I ran away....I mean found a tactically better location to fight the bear
