Player crashes my server when joining. Only he crashes it and everyone else can join fine. Any ideas?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had any clue as to what could be causing the issue we are having. We have about 10 people playing on a friends only server. 9/10 people are able to join and play without any issues. When one specific person joins no matter how many people are online, the game for the host (me) crashes. There are no error messages or anything, the game just dissapears. I have posted my output log as well as his. It shows that him joining is the last thing that happens in my log. Any clues?

First log no notable issues found. Second log the same.

If your friend is 'Austin The King Duck', then this is the section where they try to connect to the server.

It would appear that the disconnection is external from the server. So it's most likely a problem with their connection, or with something like security software blocking it.  I cover both of these in detail in the Sticky FAQ thread.

The player who is crashing the server is all the way at the bottom. Their steam name never actually comes up. These are always the last two lines I see in the output log when it crashes.

The server crashes as soon as he joins. He is also able to join other servers. I am puzzled as to why this is happening.

Do you get a crash log message in windows? On the server PC start "eventvwr" and look for a log message at the time of the crash. If not, someone with more knowledge of windows debugging might suggest other ways to create or find a crash log.

A client should not be able to crash the server. Maybe @Jugginator wants to take a look at it.

@meganoth I checked t he event viewer at the time of the crasah and it didn't show anything.

@Jugginator I cheched the " Saves\world name\ server name\player\ " and I could not find his steam ID listed there.

Something that might help with troubleshooting: One of my other friends tried to make a server as well. The player that crashed mine, crashed his in the same fashion. His paste bin is here: https://pastebin.com/eyy2faB1 . It stops at the same exact place as mine. We've had the problem friend verify the game files, disabling anti-cheat, and do a fresh install. He is able to play single player, but not join us. I even tried messing with that whole SteamNetworking thing in the server file.

Asking to make sure: You looked into the "Application" section of the event viewer about the crash log, right?

-----

Your friend is able to crash 2 servers from afar by sending a poisonous network packet. But he is able to connect to a lot of other servers without sending that packet. So what is the difference that makes only your servers react this way?

The follow up question would be: Did you and your friends server have something in common? Did you set up the servers similarily (by one of you following the other on how to setup the server)? Do you have the same server provider (in case of a cloud server) or the same internet provider? Do you have your servers operating system set up similarly (for example same virus scanner or same cache config)?

One common thing is that on your servers the litenetlib connection fails and the network code falls back to steamnetworking. You can see that in his client log there is always the line "INF NET: LiteNetLib: Connection failed: ConnectionFailed".

So the user that crashes your servers could check if the line above turns up in his logs when he connects to other servers. If no, it is very likely a precondition to crashing the servers and if you can do that in any way you should try to get litenetlib connections to work and see if the problem vanishes. If yes, it still could be a precondition, but other factors are involved too.

The other thing you could do is make a bug report. For that some data is needed so the bug can be replicated by TFPs testers (the logs sadly don't help much). Data could be the network packets at the time of the crash. You can record them with wireshark I think. Then someone at TFP could look at the last packet and check the code that is started when that packet is received.

Much better is a crash log on the server though. Since there is nothing in the eventviewer logs, you could start the server in a command line window (cmd.exe) and see if something is printed in that window when the server crashes. Or do something else so crashes are reported, like starting the server in a de@%$# (if that is possible, might clash with the DRM stuff of steam). I don't know how to do that in detail, I'm a linux user. Does anybody else know?

Hey there, my partner and I are having this exact problem. She has an ASUS ROG gaming laptop and every server she joins crashes before her character spawns in. The log messages are identical to what has already been shared here (with the exception of the player name/ID) so I won't bother repeating that.

This evening we've tried testing the problem. I've hosted a game on my machine and she's joined using her laptop - my game crashes completely and her game gives a message about the server being unavailable. We then tried having me log in to Steam on her laptop and her on mine and if she hosts a game on my PC and I join via her laptop the game on my PC once again crashes.

Her laptop can happily host games which others can join with no problem, but as soon as she tries to join a game using her laptop the host crashes.

I've just checked the Event Viewer and there is something which is common to all the times a crash occurs - an RPC warning:

Application ("C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay_5.621.4142.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\GameBarFTServer.exe" -Embedding) (PID: 26592) has failed to complete a COM/RPC call because of an invalid message from server. User Action Try the operation again. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator.

I'm not sure what XboxGamingOverlay is but it's the only Event Viewer log and it the warning gets logged within 1 second of the crash happening every single time.

We found a not massively useful workaround: if the host has the in-game terminal window open the crash does not happen (and for clarity the above XboxGamingOverlay warning does not trigger). This is all well and good when playing with someone who you know is about to join, but considering the game on my partner's laptop is able to crash any game it joins it's not useful for the wider public.

Edit:

Disabling Xbox Game Bar fixes the problem!

With this disabled my partner's laptop can happily join other people's games without them crashing.

I guess this is something the dev team will need to fix in the game itself though, but for now everything appears to be running as expected with that disabled.

You need to create a new topic and follow the sticky about reporting the issue you are seeing.  Not all issues are caused by the same errors and nobody can help you if you don't provide the necessary details for root causing.

This is all I could find at the very bottom is where the game crashes which is when i load in where the logs stop. we are using a couple mods but I'm not sure if that would be the issue or not. 7 days to die did have a an update yesterday when the problem actually started so i don't know if that has something to do with it either.

Look at your own post and tell me if it looks readable to you 😉. Next time please start a new thread here in the "General Support" section and read the pinned thread that tells you to read it. It specifically explains how to post a logfile (spoiler: with the help of pastebin). And in case of multiplayer games usually logfiles of server AND client are needed.

But for the current situation here is a guess: If the game was updated it is likely that one of your mods isn't working anymore. You have to watch the mods pages for updates or messages that it still works with your current version of the game.

Thanks for letting me know kinda new to all this

no worries.  I realized that I forgot to paste the link to the sticky to read before posting new issues.  Normally I do that, but in your case I forgot to.

Commenting here because we solved this after a long problem solving session...
For us, it is an issue with ASUS devices and their bloatware. If you have an ASUS laptop, go into Task Manager > Services and try disabling some of the ASUS services.

We weren't able to isolate specifically which service it was, because after joining a server and then later turning them back on, we didn't get the problem anymore. But we did narrow it down to these ones:
- ASUSLinkNear
- ASUSLinkRemote
- ASUSOptimization
- ASUSSwitch
- AsusMultiAntennaSvc
- ASUSSystemAnalysis
- ASUSSystemDiagnosis

If someone does figure out the exact service, feel free to post it here for others to see :)
Hope this helps with such a frustrating issue.

The first issue is file path validation, it can't even begin looking for C program files. My guess is that the game and player profile are in a different location from each other, or the final path is not validated correctly. It would be worth checking file integrity and ensuring that all seven days to die folders necessary are in the same location. Tomz1229, the portion you linked does not actually contain an error, it would likely be in the redacted portions or elsewhere. On that note, do not post your steam ID, do not post your IP that is a bad plan to say the least.

Update to my post above! If the programs I listed do not work, try uninstalling Asus' GameFirst... It supposedly tries to "optimize" the network, but it just ends up sending bad packets for P2P stuff most the time. We found this out when having similar issues with a different game, but I don't doubt that it may be causing issues with 7dtd as well.

A lot of the external, or third party game programs seem to cause issues when interacting. Xbox game bar, Nvidia share and capture, Asus game first, etc. I thought for sure it would be Asus optimization that you listed before dang. I'm glad you figured it out though 👍
