noob here,  running stock 19.2 (b4) no mods or cheats.  i'm on an alienware r2 with an i7 6700 and an external nvidia 960.  i'm generating a new world and it's been running for over 30 minutes.  is this normal?  it does seem to be progressing. i'm just wondering how long this typically takes.

thanks

This was one reason I moved to Nitrogen.  I wanted a big map (10K). Also, I found road gen  and some POI placement was wonky.  Some roads would go almost vertical.  Nitrogen is faster, has less oddities, but does a reasonable job creating urban clusters, with rural POIs randomly distributed and connected to a road that is usually drivable.  I have seen some odd roads when a POI gets placed in pretty non-traversable terrain.  You would need an algorithm to build switchbacks to keep the inclines under 30 degrees.  Nitro also will carve huge gashes in mountains to place freeways, rather than have tunnels through the mountains.  I'm looking forward to seeing what TFP are doing to world gen in A20.

With that setup I'm going to assume you have 16GB RAM. It will make a big difference if you only have 8GB though.

At a guess, you're probably looking at 15 minutes for a 4k map, and 30-40 minutes for an 8k map. That system uses a locked CPU, it's kind of a sucky generation of chipsets, the PSU is hugely underpowered, and the 960 only just meets recommended spec for the game. That's not even counting it being throttled down to sub-par clock speeds due to being in a micro-case with non-existent cooling.

System load is going to make a big difference, as is the interface used for your "external" GPU as the GPU is what will primarily be used for the algorithms making the map. I would not be surprised to see that system take over an hour just because it's choking itself to death.
