When I run into a mob I just step back about 50 ft, they all get in a line coming right at me and I pick them off with my weapon of choice. If I miss the one in front, I'll frequently hit the one behind. They need to spread out.

So you want them to purposefully take a longer path to you? Path code wise that just makes zero sense to do.

It makes complete sense because they line up in a row.

In my experience, they usually don't line up.  Especially not more than two or three of them.  They kind of come together in a group, but that's only natural for most creatures.

Maybe I'm just not paying attention, or maybe it's because we play with such a large number of zombies, but I don't notice this happening very often. I guess it depends on how you define a line? They all definitely move in a direct path when able, but it's more of a blob than a line to me.

I agree, especially the wandering hordes.  Instead of spawning together in a group they should spawn at different distances in front, behind and both sides of you.

This is with a wandering hord. The other comments about this not happening is true when I'm encountering a lot of them that's not a horde.
