How to stop zombie spawns in my yard?

Recommended Posts

We have taken over a POI with a wall around it recently.  We have noticed when we come back to it that there will occasionally be zombies inside our fence.  We have beds down and a land claim block that should encompass the area but they still manage to spawn somehow.  Any idea how to stop them from spawning or are we just stuck with them?

Does the claim block cover it?

You can increase the size of it's area in the server config.

Yes it does.  We had to increase the size of the area to encompass the whole area but the zombies are still spawning inside the area.

Put down player built blocks on all ground tiles within the perimeter. Zeds are supposed to spawn only on "natural" ground tiles. However, I'm not 100% certain it helps in a19 as something might have changed, because I saw some zombies to spawn on the roof of a nearby skyscraper during the blood moon.

It still works but you need to change the pois a bit, even applying paint is enough to offhold the spawns.

Don't have a yard. An "outer wall" is essentially useless anyway, as zombies will converge on a single spot and pour in.

Except if you use this to add traps to the few entrances you leave open or close off with a door that functions as a zombie magnet.

Just put overhanging blocks there. E.g. bars. You can also use them to shoot down at the Zs.

In our current playthrough we live in the prison POI (which already has double layered concrete walls on the outside). Works very fine.

We have a claim block set there which was edited to cover the prison, however during bloodmoon few Zs still spawn in the inner garden. I guess, because there is still natural ground...

Back in 18.4 we noticed that only the first-placed LCB would prevent POI spawns. We allowed 3 per player and the 2nd and 3rd had no anti-spawning effect (though it did allow for picking up workstations). They may have fixed that by now, but something to consider.

Edit: either that, or only bedrolls would prevent POI spawns, 'cause we had our bedrolls in a different place (co-located with the 1st LCB) and we never had POI respawns over there.

We don't use the house as a blood moon base so the wall is doing fine at keeping out the occasional wandering horde and few zombies that happen by.  We also have spikes and electric fences set up to take care of those before they do any damage to the fence.

Would crafting up dirt blocks to replace the current dirt be good enough or does it have to be some other kind of block?  I would really hate to have to give up having grass and would probably just deal with the odd zombie instead.

Are you positive you completely cleared it at first? Bedroll/lcb only prevent new sleeper spawns if it has been completely cleared before placing them.

No. There's a rumor/phrase of "player built blocks", but the game doesn't really know who built a block. There's several types of spawns, "random world", "horde" and "sleeper".

Sleepers can spawn in an invisible block where ever such is defined, these are within POIs. Placing a block in it will prevent that spot from spawning again. (Or it might not, as per Boidster below.. sigh)

Horde and random world spawns will spawn in an area, and always on terrain-type blocks. You know, the dirt-like diamond shaped stuff ground consists of. Replacing the ground with any normal blocks will prevent spawns, but it's also quite tedious... if you do a large enough area, you will completely break your horde night.

The issue I mentioned above was in the Doggos POI. We cleared it out and used one room of the upper floor as a workstation area. Planted a LCB (LCB #2 for my player) in the middle of the POI. No bedrolls, though.

Then we started to get dogs and zombies respawning from the sleeper volumes. So I added wood plates on top of all floors (and the roof) and still the dogs would respawn. So I put frames right into the area where the dogs spawned and still they spawned right inside the frames. Maybe it was something specific about dogs. If I remember correctly I re-placed the LCBs so that the Doggos LCB was #1. That seemed to stop the spawns. That's why I thought maybe there was a bug where subsequent LCBs didn't actually have an anti-spawning effect. But I never did get around to rigorous testing. I just wanted the dang dogs to stop attacking the LCB itself, which was outside our cemented-in workstation room, but in the same room as the dogs' spawning area.

ETA: this was 18.4; may no longer apply in A19

Huh, all right; I may have spoken with too much confidence there. I haven't tested that part in a while, not in A19, maybe not even in A18. I have tested it a couple times, and back then I managed to get some zeds spawning inside wood frames, but no spawns with upgraded blocks.. I never tested with dogs though, nor with non-cube blocks. Argh, can't rely on anything :)

Thanks for the info though :)

Well whaddaya know, it pays to check the known issues list:

  • No sleeper respawn protection for 2nd, 3rd, or Xth land claim blocks

At least I know we weren't going crazy!

Sarcasm post.  Here is what my base defense looks like.   This will keep all the zombies off your lawn.

I would pay cold, hard Venmo for a PvZ overhaul for 7D2D. Re-skin the zombies into PvZ models, add a lawnmower trap, make SMG turrets look like pea shooters and shotgun turrets into threepeaters. Chrysanthemum with the sunflower face. I'd GoFund the F*** out of that project.
