Possible Bug - Phantom Blocks - I Believe It's a Long-Known Problem

there are no video settings to set the range of the distance rendering.

Yes there is. It's called View Distance. This adjusts how many chunks around your person are rendered in your client. Anything outside of that would be handled by distant POI.

sounded like he was only referring to distant poi to me, not general chunk loading. 👍

Yep, that's what I'm talking about.  I thinking if the distance was able to be reduced, it could just snap to the close up textures when I got closer to a POI instead of trying to load so many and then failing, leaving us with the distant ones.

A console command to "check" the POI's in my range that should have the close textures and updating them if needed would solve the issue, too.  It seem like once the distant ones "lock in", I can't get them to be change to the close ones unless I either use the pois console command (and lose distant textures entirely) or restarting the game standing next to the POI I want the close textures in.

So you don't even meet minimum specs. This isn't really surprising then, but at least the information gives me something I can test with. I have a laptop with no GPU or dedicated VRAM like yours I can use with those settings.

And just for reference, I set up a desktop that almost exactly met minimum specs last night, and could not replicate this issue in either a18 or a19.

Your GPU. Client requires 2GB dedicated VRAM on minimum specs, and 4GB on recommended. Your pseudo-GPU doesn't have any. It claims 6GB, but that's is shared system RAM, and not dedicated. It's also stealing CPU cycles because it's an inbred chip, and not an actual dedicated GPU chipset.

Add that to the extremely poor performing 8400, and the only thing that really performs above min spec is the RAM and maybe the hard drive.

Even using specs that meet requirements like the OP has, I have been unable to replicate this issue. I'm going to be pulling out that old craptop I have in a minute to test though. Like yours it has a weak CPU and inbred GPU stealing the RAM.

ok, so I ran the test, and was unable to replicate the issue.

So after playing a bit and not getting anything, I turned on creative mode and started teleporting around. Then I just put it in fly mode and went cruising around a city at high speed. Definitely exceeded what this laptop is capable of by a large margin.

And only then did I start to see it.

ok, thanks. but now im pissed because the s**t head at best buy lied to me. i just bought this PC 6 weeks ago and he told me the graphics card was intel, but that it was rated similar to gforce 1080. i'm about to go (redacted)

Hopefully they let u return.  I bought a Lenovo legion laptop at the beginning of the year that is running the game at medium/hight settings.  It was on sale under $1k at costco.

 16gb ram, ssd, gtx 1660ti 6gb vram.

Well, I've been experimenting a bit as well and have these bits to add:

1. It's not certain. Sometimes I can play all evening and never see it, sometimes I have to restart twice during 3-hour session

2. It has happened to me while I was still in "gee, I finally have a bicycle" phase, so nothing extremely fast. I can't handle gyro so I never fly it 🙂

3. I've never seen problem fix itself - when a POI was "blocked", it was blocked even if I returned later. I do my missions solo even in multiplayer and am quite sure the chunk had time to unload.

4. There is an angle from which the textures disappear. It is very small angle but it exists, at least for some POIs.

My PC has a bit over the recommended specs and same stuff happens on a brand new and rightfully expensive pc a friend has bought several months ago.

Hope it helps.

Ive got this issue as well, and ive made similar observations. Sometimes i can play four hours and not see it once, sometimes its 10 mins.  Ive noticed that restarting the game sometimes helps, but theres some pois that seem to permanently be stuck in this state. I always figured it was something with the lod's but idk much about it. I only started experiencing it after the move to a19, but now even if i revert back to a18 it has started there as well. Really hope its fixed as it just removes any desire to play.

I just started having this problem today and thought it might have been a mod.  I listed the mods I have below in the screen shot.  Running i5-3750k and Vega 56.  8gb ram.  Windows 7 64 bit.  I've found when a POI goes wonky I can exit and reload the map.  The  POI goes back to normal but it will start getting crazy with the walk through blocks and marble blocks.  I was at this boat dock that had a boat with normal metal pontoons.  When things went wonky, the entire boat turned into marble blocks.   Hope there is a fix soon for this problem.

I confirm this bug since first a18 (happen one time) & since a19 experimental (many time more than a18)... & it's not specific to a prefab or biome, that can happen anywhere, on/under ground prefab or middle of somewhere lost & in the sky too & whatever single/coop/server modded or not...

Last time happen with the last a19 exp, underground middle of nowhere in desert & zero prefab all around at +1km, I can't placed 2 blocks, I see the square block is red & not green or white... I save my game, I return to test to reset chunk with the command & try the same building I did in speed in the same aera at the same coordinate, always can't place any block but this time I got one more phantom block linked with 2 last others...

(Edit: command repair chunk don't fix it)

& I don't know if it's linked with that bug, but this 2 phantom blocks was stone block in fact, but I saw it as a sand block like all other blocks! The sound destroy is the sound for stone block & the loot was stone & not sand... That happen in single/coop/server modded or not & not only for me... & seem like the same thing for all block named with "terr..." in all biome whatever the elevation... Like dirt in biome pine-forest, I see it like a dirt but sound/loot was stone... This was that too since the first a18...

I just started having this issue with a19 but don't want to got back to a18 lol.

I can say that it generally happens when I am travelling faster. If I am walking around I usually don't have it happen. The problems will start arising once I get a bike or any other transportation.  It's always fixed after I exit and reload the game. I thought it might be related to nitrogen generated worlds so I've stopped using them but I still have the issue. Did full uninstall (even manually deleted leftover files) and reinstall and just as others reported it did not help.

Im experiencing the same and it does appear to be moving faster then it can load. Im running a i7 7820HK 32gb ram GTX1080. I see it a lot more hosting a duo game but also see it on single ever so often. Wife has a 1060 and an i5 and never sees it in my game. Its only me.

I'm having this problem too. Playing SP with enough resources to play the game.

Asus Sabretooth 990fx MB/AMD FX 4170 @ 4.2 GHz/G.SKILL Sniper 16 Gb mem/Geforce Gtx 1080 8Gb/860 EVO 1 Tb SSD. I am still on Win 7 OS. CPU cores run at 6 degrees celcius.

I've generated a fresh random map. I am in a new game on day 3 so I'm just walking. I tried the pois command which worked but then I fell through the terrain which hard locked up my system so completely, I could not control/alt/delete to recover. I haven't had that (not being able to recover/task manager) with any other game and I play heavily modded skyrim LE.

I didn't have this problem with A18. I have been using the A19 experimental branch when this happens. It makes the game unplayable. Even the trader has phantom blocks. I am running mods on 7D2D but nothing that changes/adds to terrain/pois/textures. Mostly just xml edits.

No offense, but that CPU will bottleneck a GTX 770 on a regular game at 1080p. This is a voxel game that demands even more from the CPU. Dropping a 1080 into the system is a complete waste unless you happen to have immediate plans for upgrading the rest of the system.

The GTX 1080 Armor was an upgrade from my last video card, a GTX 680 Lightning. I didn't want to step up through all the video cards so I bought the 1080. I'm still happy with the way it performs. 7D2D isn't the only game I play and I get amazing results (Arma 3 etc) over the old 680. My last upgrade was the SSD which was the final upgrade for this 7 year old MB/CPU combo. When I stop being happy, I'll upgrade the MB/CPU. I've been doing it this way since my first PC (386 DX 33), buy very good components for that tech era and keep it for years.

I am aware that voxel games like 7D2D and Emperion are CPU intensive. I am also aware that the AMD CPU falls short on true multi threading. Next CPU will probably be an Intel.

Actually, now your next CPU should be an AMD. As of the 3rd gen chipsets, AMD is blowing the pants off of Intel for a change. Took them almost 20 years to turn the tables, but they have done it, and in a really huge way. You can get better performance cheaper with AMD now, and the 4th gen is going to put Intel to shame even more than the 3rd gen did. It's why I went with a 3900X instead of an i7-9900k or 10900k.
