How do I use the terrain editing tools to dig a pit ?

I'm trying to dig a big pit with the terrain tools.

• I started the game from the launcher with EAC turned off (yes, I'm doing it in-game)
  
• Debug mode is on
  
• I press z and a blue block appears in one corner of what I want gone
  
• I aim at the other corner of what I want gone and press z again
  
• A blue box appears selecting the blocks I want to get rid of
  

 

 

Then what ? From what I can see in the control layout menu I should be able to press J to nuke that selection but J doesn't do anything, neither does j or DEL. I've obviously missed an instruction somewhere, can someone possibly point me in the right direction ?

I think it's 'k', which pops up a dialog, first or second from top is about prefabs and there's a "clear selection"-button on the next page.

 

Can't remember the exact UI terms there, but should be at the top left of the dialogs..
