Merandor
I play Warrior but with perma-death and a brand new random map each time. The last 2 starts didn't go well First game Day 1, 10.45a.m. attacked by a frenzied feral with a pet dog. Second game Say 1 2.20pm attacked by a pack of dogs. It may just be bad luck but its really unusual having unwinnable battles on day
Orclover
I will never understand how people play on harder than average difficulty with 1 down. I mean I have the lowest death and highest kill count on my server consistently and I know occasionally this game just flat out decides its your day to die, and you will have no say so in the matter. I have had motorcycles, bicycles and scooters send me into the air a few hundred feet and send me plummeting to my death after hitting an invisible road bump. I have had packs of zombears suddenly appear out of the sky above my head and maul me to death while I was sneaking around the wasteland. Last night I jumped off the railing of the shotgun messiah factory roof, landed on a large empty open roof area and when my feet touched the ground there appeared a dozen glowing zeds including glowing wights and glowing cop zeds who appeared and promptly woke up (I survived that, thanks running shoes/jacket). This game is built to occasionally just flat out kill you, without logic or reason behind it. Teleportation zeds are the worst offenders but not the only ones. On the night of the 55th after my squad had finished clearing a house poi for a lowbie guildie I got attacked when we all walked outside by a whole flock of infected super spitting vultures from nowhere. They all homed in on me and were quite annoying before we cleared the air. SO yea, this game takes some real swipes at you occasionally when you least expect it. I would only play on 1 death if it involved a bet.
RipClaw
In a manner of speaking, it got harder. The rage catches many players off guard. Especially in the first days. The damage of the weapons has also been reduced. Many of the tier 1 weapons are extremely weak. The primitive bow, for example, is almost useless at higher difficulty levels. At best you can anger zombies with it. In addition, the behavior of the melee weapons is completely different than in A17. If I were you, I'd decrease 1 or 2 difficulty levels until you got used to the new game mechanics.
theFlu
1st Day 1: I'm assuming wasteland for those spawns, but could be mistaken. If so; if you can't die in wasteland on day 1, the game is balanced poorly Although, one feral + dog should be nerdpoleable, it's quite tricky with how easily they climb each other and the dog taking out the lowest block. Probably requires a flagstone pole tbh. Cheesy? Yeah. That's why I usually don't play dead is dead "officially", even though I often quit a map if I die. The game isn't exactly making "not cheesing" easy... Pack of dogs.. well, maybe unlucky, but you can't afford to drop your guard without safety. Wandering hordes are of course quite varied in difficulty, dogs being the most annoying ones, but they're usually avoidable as they zoom right past you. You just don't go to places where you can't see them coming - without a plan.

New starts in alpha 18, no problems. No ferals on day one, no packs of dogs. It wasn't necessarily a feral. On warrior difficulty, the rage mode kicks in pretty often, sometimes also the super rage mode and that looks pretty much like a feral zombie. Rage mode can even be triggered when a zombie steps on a cactus.

Laz Man
Game is balanced around nomad difficulty per MM, try that for now and see how you fair.
Lightingfast29
If you really want a challenging survival world you should try to edit zombie spawns:) I have mine set to 9 in day and 10 max at night:) it's giving me a real challenge and I like it. I had a base but now Im going to find a new place to build cause I got swarmed by a whole bunch of sprinting zombies that broke through at night I laughed so hard. I got a few of em but they kept coming it was scary and fun:) P.s edit your zombie spawns if you want a real challenge or you feel it's to boring. New starts in alpha 18, no problems. No ferals on day one, no packs of dogs. They actually send random encounters to you twice a day now in A18 and I've seen packs of dogs sent on day 1 too, although I play on insane with nightmare speed so perhaps they're able to get on me quicker or I get worse encounters spawned earlier because of the difficulty. Not sure about ferals since they're the same speed anyway. Believe it or not, in my last insane world on day one I encountered one zombie bear outside a POI barn and killed it, then went inside and had three more zombie bears end up attacking the barn/me while I was inside. I can't imagine they were random bad luck.

Scyris
To be fair stepping on a cactus can send me into a rage. If you'd have shoes on you'd be finnnne, but most zombies don't. I've played dead is dead since a18 experimental wanna know the only 2 things thats killed me? and it only happens before I got any sort of a gun for one of them? Wildlife: wolfs, or murder kitties, or zombie dogs/bears. I've never actually died to a zombie in a18 yet. Its either a wolf/dog/bear early game, or a landmine I run over. The zombies even ferals are easy to outrun even on day 1. But outrunning the wolf/dogs/bears is much harder to do. To dodge them you can't just run on a straight line, it does not work, as they can run as fast as you, you need to weave around obsticles and such and hope they get stuck on it for a second or so. I usually get bored by day 19 or so, so i've been restarting my dead is dead games as by day 19-20 I have like all t6 stuff from loot and such that there is no real reason to keep playing. They really need to edit the loot, by day 19-20 you should be lucky to find tier 3 items at best even with max luckly looter, with t4-6 being SUPER mega rare. I don't even take any intel in a18 as its a waste of perk points. I get adv engineering lv 1, that needs base intel only, and then grase monkey lv 1, which the smart/nerd glasses will give you the 2 int you need to learn it. After that I never touch intel again as its a waste of points. Yeah my game depends more on rng this way as I rely on schematics, but I find it more FUN that way. No 2 games are ever the same, last game I found the cruicble schematic on day 1, along with workbench and chemlab. This game? day 10, only got workbench, no chemlab, no crucible. Though I did get lucky, and on pregen 2, there are 2 working chem labs in a poi right by the church_sm_01 I base in, so I am using those for now. In fact the closer of the 2 ALSO has a working workbench as well, not that I need it now. If you want the loc I can give you it, as what stations spawn initially are set it seems on world generation, they will always be the same ones working/broken, unless you say take a quest for that poi, when you hit that ! to start it, it'll reroll all stations, sometimes it even turns a busted one into a working one, its rng when you reset it. My base is in a brown brick church the one without a graveyard, and its in a LARGE city in the forest biome. Trader is about 1 km away from the base. About 5 or 6 other small towns are also within 1-2km of this base. It also has the supercorn poi in the map though I have not found it yet. Map does have 1 area where the ground is weird, looks like someone took a square and pressed it down, but other than that, its fine.
Beelzybub
Playing on default difficulty I died early on day 1 to a dog of some sort that I couldn't outrun. Had full stamina, he was just faster than me.

I've experienced the same thing since, I don't know, like alpha 8 or something. I get bored. There's little or no challenge. Now that said, that's single player. MP is always challenging. But because of the game getting boring around day 21 or so in sp, I've restarted the game many times, probably over 100. It's always fun to restart. One alpha a long time ago, had a start in a very large snow biome. And it was super cold. It was MP and many people tried to join and almost all of them died, over and over. You couldn't get out of the cold before you'd die. But I kept trying and I made it a few times. Set up the same seed on single player and did it dozens of times, died almost every time. It was fun and challenging. I miss that challenge. Another MP server everyone started in one small area that was 100% surrounded for very long distances with dog infested ruins. That one even after dozens of tries I never could make it past the dogs. So I just died out finally, you know, didn't put down a sleeping bag and died to a decent starting location. But that challenge was a lot of fun. I guess to make it challenging we should mod the game. Some of the poi's are fun and challenging, but you get good at them pretty quick. I'll start a new one with running all the time and no respawn of loot, see if I can survive.
