SMGs....do I have this right?

Am I right in saying that if I put points into Machine Gunner, I can craft increasingly better AKs, but there is no equivalent for SMGs beyond finding the Schematic? Seems odd (and annoying as hell - I specced into Pistols the moment I knew SMGs were counted as Pistols).

 

SMGs are proving rare as hell. We've found 2, both of them level 1 which is useless.

The SMG sucks though, does less damage than the pistol way less. I'd rather slap a full auto mod into a pistol. Due to the full auto mod existing there is really no valid reason why the smg does less than the pistol per shot. Even moreso when its supposed to be the tier above but its... weaker? At least give it the same damage the pistol has it'll be like the M60, its basically a ak47 with a much larger clip.

The SMG is more accurate, has longer effective range (I think 30m compared to pistol's 18m), and fires more than twice as fast as the pistol without having to use a mod slot to be full auto, and like 3x as fast if you throw in the rod and spring mod. Plus you can now put a barrel magazine on the SMG for an even larger ammo capacity over the pistol.

 

If you're so strapped for ammo that you have to get the maximum value from each bullet, then the pistol is technically better. But an SMG can clear a horde much quicker than the pistol ever could.

 

Also, a submachine gun is mainly differentiated from an assault rifle in that it fires pistol caliber bullets.

Personally I love the SMG. Have for many versions. Only looking at it's stats you think "This sucks" but using it in practice is whole different animal. Its ROF and stability make it easy to rip through zombies quickly. There are situations where I feel it out performs the AK and will use it instead of the AK.

 

If the zombies arent directly on top of me, I am guaranteed more hits per second than than the AK I guess is why. It is reliable/ easy to operate.

I care about damage per shot more, the pistol has upwards of 30-50% higher damage per shot, and with a full auto mod it can fire about as fast as the smg. Again, no reason for the smg to do less per shot than the pistol. The AK's problem is its accuarcy is garbage, even with mods. p.s. the reflex sight mod doesn't add to weap handling either, crosshair is suppose to shrink when its on but it doesn't do anything.

The full auto mod does not change the RoF of a weapon, so no the pistol can't fire as fast, not even close.

Then you have a good roll pistol, bad roll SMG or both at once.

Random stats, remember?

Before randomized stats, the SMG did less damage per shot than the pistol (which should never be the case). With randomized stats, I don't know what the ranges are, but the minimum and maximum damage rolls for the SMG should be higher than the pistol (say pistol is 18-26, SMG should be 19-27 or some such). A pistol should never do more damage than an AK, but perhaps that's an argument for a different day. :p

The smg fires way faster than a pistol though which makes sense as to why it is weaker per shot. Its damage over time trumps the pistol. And as others have already stated, full auto does not make the pistol fire any faster, it just lets you hold the trigger down to keep firing rather than pull it for each shot.
