kingvar
So that is my current "base" in my alpha 17 world. I had the original plan to create a moat of spikes with 4 bridges leading to my main platform that had hatches, where zombies would fall straight through and die. But i'm playing on Darkness Falls mod where nights are hordes are incredibly hard, so what ended up happening is they would strip all my iron spikes within the first hour of night, and then come straight for my supports. Need some help deciding on a new base idea, I dug out the entire moat (8x8) by hand with my trusty iron shovel, and eventually auger, so I would love to utilize it somehow. Thank you in advance to anyone who chimes in, need some pro advice for a nooby builder ;b Also forgot to mention, I tried to do a "loop" type of base where I had a ramp leading back up to the grassy area to exploit the pathfinding but I found that no matter how close the ramp is to the zombies in my moat, they just love to smack my supports and walls. Ti2xGr
I would consider filling your moat with water and putting barbed wire fences in it. Yes, they will eventually hit at your supports - it's what they do on occasion. However, between the water and barbed wire fences, you should have enough time to kill them before they hit your supports.
kingvar
That's a pretty good suggestion, I never thought of using water. How hard would it be to fill the moat in survival singleplayer? I live pretty close to a water source.
Ti2xGr
Just have to make a bucket. They can be used over and over.
Jarod_Silverstar
In response to the zombies doing a lot more attacking of structure, I have started creating a lot of extra blocks and placing them around in small stacks to give the zombies more targets to attack. That way it reduces the focus on the load bearing ones and if you lay barbed wire on the ground around the stacks they will not hit and run as quickly so you have more time to target. Build a platform with a floor you can shoot through, add as much reinforcement to your load bearing ones and them a lot of cheaper dummy targets that the zombies can waste time on while you kill them. NightRanger
When it comes to base designs, it really depends on you as a player are you the kind of person that likes to fight the horde face-to-face with extreme adrenaline and risk, or are you the more risk free type? Another thing to consider is, do you just want to avoid the horde the best you can in a sweet "retirement" style base build and not really have to worry about your base being absolutely devastated? bobrpggamer
Just have to make a bucket. They can be used over and over. I always wondered what the bucket at traders was for. Starting out, using 2 block high flagstone columns (can be any shape i just used square blocks) all over placed at random can interrupt the zombies and that will sometimes just attack the block set outside your base for no real reason and giving you time to shoot them with frag rockets or exploding crossbow bolts. Also do not allow the horde to tunnel under your base, always have level approach for them. Given the option they will cut through dirt like a hot knife through butter and this will collapse the supports holding up you base. You also may not be able to see them as they are tunneling under and you may not even know they are there until its too late. It would be better to have a castle like wall around you base level with the rest of the ground, this way they will just tunnel through walls on level ground and you will be able to keep an eye on them during the process. Also lots of spike traps as well will keep them busy while you are trying to deal with them. My rule is make sure you see them and never lose track of where they are. That's why I use the perches and catwalk all around, to keep an eye on them. Keeping sight in mind, try not to use HE Rockets anywhere around your base because they will create massive holes in the ground and allow them to tunnel under from there. I learned the hard way as I thought the HE Rockets were the same in A17 as A16. Instead they destroy concrete as well now in A17 and create holes in you base platform. How the crap are you getting frag rockets or exploding crossbow bolts early on? I must really suck at this game or have the worst loot luck ever. I can barely get bullets in the first 7 days. I usually have to take on the first horde or two with stone arrows. :\

I am day 20 and am level 71 right now and I have made some exploding crossbow bolts and a few frag grenades. you can fashion crossbows with advanced engineering level 1 but you have to be level player level 25 to unlock it. You can make exploding crossbow bolts with Yeah, Science at level 2. You can also get exploding crossbow bolts from the trader quests. Starting out I had nothing either so I guess it is common. You just have to be patient and this is the reason I hate starting a new game because I have no patients to speak of.
Sawth77
Honestly, regardless of my base shape or construction, i just dig a pit around it 3-4 blocks wide and 3 blocks or so deep, and dump a bunch of spike traps in there, then put spike traps against/along the walls. Then again, i am a crappy base builder and unfortunately play alone. It does work though, and being able to make concrete on day 1 or 2 without having to buy into the perks is a plus for this kind of setup.

Your base can only be crappy to you, if you build a base and it is not a shiny castle but you like it anyway then it would not be crappy and who cares what anyone else thinks, its your base. Base building is a big part of the game for some people like me but there are other ways people play such as from what I hear playing "nomad style", however you play the game if you are enjoying it then don't worry if your base may seem crappy to other people, as long as you are happy with it. Fair enough. It's not as shiny as i'd like it, but it seems functional enough and works for me. I haven't really done the nomad thing, i tend to pick a spot and build a base from scratch. basically a huge tower with lots of defense, though i don't use a ton of the mechanized traps and such. Thanks!

Thanks! As far as this nomad style gameplay, I wonder if you could actually use the 4X4 on bloodmoon say after day 28 and beyond and just run them down until 4:00 am. I would not do this but I wonder if it has been done by someone. Or maybe someone could use the gyrocopter and fly around above the zombies and just stop and refill the gas when need be and come down after 4:00 am or something. One advantage of this would be conserving ammo. Personally I like to defend my base and use different weapons on bloodmoon, I use a lot of frag rockets and spend a lot of 7.62 with my AK or Marksman Rifle.
