Changing weapon impact sounds

So I'm in the process of adding a new melee weapon. I have it all working ingame and all, but I was wondering if there was a way to change the sounds for when it hits thing, like blocks or zombies.

 

I kind of figured out how to add a custom sound for when it hits something by looking a Mayic's code for his kiss arrows. And it plays the sound whenever my weapon hits anything, but they regular sounds still play alongside it. Is there a way to either get rid of the vanilla impact sounds just for this weapon, or at least change them for it?

That sound is controlled in the sounds.xml based on material hits material. Unless you changed the material of the weapon, it will make the appropriate sound. In a16, if you made a new material it would not play a sound but would cause an error in the console. I have not tested this in A17 though.
