Why is there a zombie in the ceiling?

In A16.4 there was the odd POI (like that pawn shop) where zombies would drop out the ceiling. Also some multilevel buildings had weak blocks that would break, making you or zombies fall through to the level below.

I didn't mind that at all. It added a bit of spice to the game, but I feel like most POIs I visit now have zombies in the ceiling, or in some little cut out alcove that doesn't make any architectural sense. It's no longer a jump scare because I'm expecting it.

Am I the only one who feels this has been a bit overused now?

I'd like to suggest, if I may, that whomever is in charge of sleeper placement, that they keep the 'dropping zombie sleepers' only where it makes sense to have them - for example a shop that stores goods in the ceiling - it's conceivable that there were workers stacking things up there and that's how they got there in the first place. Or multi-level buildings.

That type of scenario, I just imagine that someone's loved one told them to hide there and not move until it was safe. It never became safe so they died up there. I agree, not the greatest logic, but hiding in a ceiling/attic that zombies hopefully wouldn't see you, is a solid idea. Laying there until you die of hunger/thirst, not so much, but possibly they were infected and no noise prompted them to move.

Happened to me once that I entered a house with a ceiling made of wood beams and there were like 5 zombies standing on them like if they were pigeons or something, was funny that time but now is just annoying having to look up every time you enter a room

This is probably one of the more annoying dev moments for me, is every zombie is now "Hidden" or up in the rafters of crap, and its "Every" damn POI you go into, its a little bit overboard if you ask me, if it was only a few then it wouldn't be so bad but "Every, single poi" has this feature and its gotten really old really fast.

"HAH!GOTCHA! moments are only funny once.

I liked the explanation (from a non-TFP person) that the Duke made all of these buildings traps, stashing zombies (or almost dead people) in these hidey-holes, as a means of trying to kill the player. I added that this is like Hunger Games, helping it make even more sense that the Duke would do this.

Not all the time, but as long as it's random then it's not so bad. I don't mind the jump scares. It's when it becomes meh, and you know it's going to happen that it loses it's fun.

That's why I keep saying some of the sleeper zombies should just be dead zombies. That way you don't know if it's a dead zombie or something that will move. And then if you get too complacent they will whack you when you get close.

Would be more fun. Wouldn't be fun if it was every zombie. But as I said, removing "predictability" would be great. so have some dead guys just laying there, some ceilings, and some closets/doors etc.

I think it's a good addition as long as it's done in moderation to make it enjoyable and still scary because it's unpredictable.

I think they set things up so you could mod something similar to this into the game, but I have never tested it to see if it works.

From gamestages.xml :

3. decoyChance: determines how many OF the spawned sleepers will be DECOYS

4. decoy1hpChance: determines how many OF the spawned decoys will be ONE HIT POINT DECOYS

1 HP decoys: Will never wake up due to sight/sound events. Will die instantly if attacked.

By default all of the spawner groups have these set to 0 chance.

Interesting. but it will still disappear right? thus, taking away the effect really needed to create concern. If the zombies is dead laying there as a ragdoll or block even, then it would give that weird feeling each time you walk by it, or eventually get complacent for the next poi you go into.

Still, glad that it is in there.

I don't know what you mean by disappear. You mean if you let the decoy sit there... left and ran away a dozen chuncks or so, then came back another day... would it still be there? That depends on two things. The first is the probability of it being chosen to spawn among all of the spawn blocks within a sleep volume. The other is the amount of time sleeper spawns reset so they are reused, located somewhere else in the xml files.

Seriously

They have only 3 options

1: Place them obviously and easy

2: Hide them and raise the difficulty a bit

3: Ninjaspawn/teleport them

3 i would hate. Maybe they exxagerated it a bit with 2, but only 1 i would not like too.

Yea, not every zombie needs to be hidden, its an interesting concept but every POI having this as a feature makes it less of a feature.

Elaborating on this it would be cool to add in a realism aspect, where one room houses most of the zombies (where people went to hide then died)

Changing the bed texture to look ruffled and maybe have them rise out of the bed (people that chose to overdose realising that apoc wasnt for them or knew they wasnt gonna make it)

Loads in the loft(attic) / basement where people holed them selves up to try to wait it out but died

One sitting on the toilet to honour Elvis

Mix this in with what we have now to constantly keep you guessing.

Any other ideas of where you could predict people dying or having their last moments? Bit of a morbid topic i know lmao but still its an idea.

ps I like the zombies just round corners etc too its good for gameplay, realism doesnt always give enough options but i feel there could be more =)

I for one hope they never listen to you guys. I love the new POIs and I love having to check ceilings. I love that there are a ton of zombies packed into each one. I like staying inside and clearing room to room but I’m glad others can lure them outside and kill them in the street if they want.

I think this thread reveals just how differently than the devs some of you define fun. Level gates are what I hate the most but the new POIs are one of the things that I love the most.

Unlike some of you I actually do still come across some homes that are open and non-dungeon like. Sleepers just lying in plain site and 2-3 rooms off of the main living room. Boring.

And you guys want more of these basic giant bricks spawning in the world? Good news is there is a prefab editor now you can use and the types of houses you want should be super easy to copy and paste with new paint jobs. Fill your own worlds up with them and have at it.

Hopefully, A18 will bring another nice crop of the awesome new POIs.

Its actually only the new a17 prefabs that have this, the old school a16 ones don't afaik. I do agree its annoying though because the zombies in closets? ok maybe one per house can pass, but when multiple rooms end up having them, its kinda silly. The zombies in the pawn shop cieling DO make sense, as right by the entrance if you go in and go left, you'll see a clear way you can easly hop up to the cieling, its also a fast way to the goodies. Just need a wood frame to do the first hop if you don't have parkour lv 3. I like the zombies in closets etc, and the ones in the rafters and such, I just feel its a tad too overdone, as in too many are in places that make no real sense.

Ninjaspawn is definitely a thing already in game. Zombies can spawn off screen. If you clear out a corner of the car park, then rotation your character 360 degree, you can often find a new zombie just spawned at the corner you just cleared. It is really annoying. Ninijaspawn + FPS issue when zombies spawns, I am starting to feel tried of the game. May be I will come back when A18 is out.

Whoever did the POIs deserves an award. They are insanely entertaining, and easily one of the best new features of the game, and I have no doubt they will only get better and better.

My only wish is I would like to see a little more randomness to where the zombies spawn in a POI.
