Steel (where to get it)

Hi all, I'm on level 42 and just about to gather all the materials to build my first motorbike. I'm just lacking steel. Does anyone know where we can find steel in the world that does not involve going to a trader (as I have them disabled in my game)? E.g. what do we need to scrap/harvest that yields steel?

  • Munitions crate (I believe it's called) yields one or two steel ingots.
  • Working stiff tools crates have a chance to yield steel ingots.

Nothing that's scrapped will ever yield anything else then scrap iron.

Best wrenched thing is forged iron.

Unless your looting tool shop POIs, your chances to find steel without vendor before level 70 where you can build it yourself are none.

Oh, and there might be a random backpack drop from Zs, but don't count on it.

You've shot yourself in the foot by disabling traders.

At a glance in the XML, there are six harvestable blocks capable of giving Forged Steel, all of which can be obtained regardless of tool used:

Insecure Desk Safe (0 to 2)

Insecure Wall Safe (0 to 2)

Insecure Gun Safe (0 to 2)

Insecure Hardened Chest (0 to 2)

"poleTop01" (0 to 3)

Munitions Box (2 to 4)

The quantity is what you'll get when the game rolls that as the harvest material.

There are also eight "loot groups" capable of giving Forged Steel:

"tools" (1 to 4)

"workingStiffs" (1 to 4)

"Regular" Zombie Backpack (2 to 10)

"Strong" Zombie Backpack (1 to 8)

"Construction Supplies Shipping Crate" (3 to 15)

"Car Parts Shipping Crate" (3 to 12)

Destroyed Forge (5 to 20)

Destroyed Workbench (5 to 10)

Even with traders enabled, your chances of finding steel are very small. Your chances of finding the *sufficient* amount of steel are negligible. I have three traders I visit regularly in my Nav game, and none of them had any steel ever. My Barter perk is maxed.

Your best bet is to stick with minibike until you can make steel yourself. It's not too bad and is much better than hoofing it or using a bicycle.

Alternatively, since you are playing a modded world anyway, you can add steel to zombie loot and various containers if it's not there yet or increase the chances of getting it if it is there already.

Thanks for the reply, Katitof. If there's no real source of steel available I can always adjust either the loot tables or the progression file to make steel unlock earlier.

I'd rather have done it vanilla but didn't realise steel was gated behind level 70, so I'll do what I must.

Thank you! Much appreciated. I'll hold off from modding just now then.

Rofl, after MM said that Safes can give steel i tried it and DIsassembled 10 Safes.

Get not even one bar of steel. Thought he was wrong.

What a joke 0 to 2 Bars for wrenching 2500 HP

My hope is that it's on the table to have safes give you steel and it just was not implemented yet and MM didn't know. I might see if I can mod that in myself.
