Are repairs supposed to work this way or not

One of the new things in alpha 17 that I absolutely love/loved was that repairs worked even while you were crafting. So if I needed to repair my hammer but I was in the process of making 100 cobblestone blocks, i didn't have to cancel the crafting just to fix the hammer.

 

That seems to be gone now. If is was a change in the patch notes, I've missed it. Is this working as intended now and if so, can we please have it back the other way? I can still repair a gun with a repair kit while crafting, why can't I repair a hammer?

In my experience items repair instantly sometimes, other times they queue for repair. I can't say I've noticed any rhyme or reason for it so it's an intended feature (I checked) which I guess isn't working properly.
